How far is Al Ain from Dubai, and how long is the drive?
Al Ain is in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, inland on the Oman border. Dubai is the other side of the desert, so the whole trip is one road, the E66 Dubai to Al Ain Road.
| Trip | Distance | Without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai to Al Ain centre | about 132 km | 1 h 34 min |
| Dubai International (DXB) to Al Ain centre | about 134 km | 1 h 35 min |
| Al Ain centre to Dubai International (DXB) | about 140 km | 1 h 33 min |
| Al Ain centre to Zayed International (AUH) | about 149 km | 1 h 32 min |
These are OSRM figures on OpenStreetMap road data, measured on 17 October 2026. Wikipedia describes Al Ain as roughly 120 km south of Dubai, a straight-line figure. The road is longer, so plan on 130 km or more.
Add time at the edges. The Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road ramps out of Dubai clog from about 4pm, and Friday evening traffic back from Al Ain is heavy.
Which bus goes from Dubai to Al Ain?
The RTA sells intercity bus tickets through its ticketing site, and its journey planner lists the routes. The intercity page we could read gave no route number, fare or timetable. Confirm all three on rta.ae or the S’hail app before you set out.
What a bus does and does not do:
- It runs between bus stations. Neither the Jebel Hafeet road nor the zoo gate is a stop.
- It leaves you to find a taxi at the other end for each sight.
- It suits one traveller going to the city, not a family with a day of stops.
Taxi or private car from Dubai to Al Ain
A metered taxi from Dubai to Al Ain is possible, but a driver on a one-way fare will want the return paid too. A private car with a driver solves the stops: it waits at each place and moves you on.
We quote Assure trips on WhatsApp, because the figure depends on the pickup, the vehicle, how many hours the car waits and the return time. Tell us the date and the number in your group and we reply with one figure. Our intercity transfers page lists the other emirates we drive to the same way.
For a set day, our Al Ain city tour pairs the car with the main sights.
What can you do in Al Ain in one day?
Al Ain is called the Garden City for its oases and the old falaj water channels. Its oases became the first UAE site on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 2011, according to Wikipedia.

A day that works from Dubai:
- Jebel Hafeet first. The mountain is about 25 km south of the city centre. Drive up in the cooler morning, because the road is a long series of switchbacks.
- Al Ain Oasis. Walk the palm groves in the city, with shade and flat paths.
- Al Ain Zoo or Al Jahili Fort. Check the zoo’s opening hours on alainzoo.com. The fort sits in the city centre.
- Return to Dubai before dark. Leave Al Ain by 5pm to miss most of the weekend traffic.
Our places to visit in Al Ain and Jebel Hafeet guide go into each stop.
Can you cross into Oman at Al Ain?
Yes, at Mezyad. The UAE post is 27 km south of the city centre and about 161 km from Downtown Dubai. On the Omani side the post is Hafeet. The German Embassy listed the crossing as open around the clock on 2 March 2026, for vehicles only.

From Hafeet, Nizwa is about 260 km and central Muscat about 334 km. The Hili post inside Al Ain faces Oman’s Sa’rah post. We found no current official statement on Hili for visitors, so we do not plan trips through it.
Before you plan an Oman day trip, read the guide to every UAE and Oman crossing. The full drive on to the capital is in our Dubai to Muscat by road guide.
Al Ain back to Dubai, or on to the airport
The return takes the same E66. From Al Ain centre, Dubai International is 1 hour 33 minutes without traffic and Zayed International 1 hour 32 minutes. Al Ain also has its own airport; see our Al Ain airport guide for what flies there.
If you are heading to a flight, tell us the flight time on WhatsApp. We set the pickup time back from check-in, not from the time you want to leave. For the wider set of trips out of the city, start from the road travel from Dubai guide.
