Cross border transfer from Dubai to Oman and the GCC

Assure runs a cross border transfer from Dubai to Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain on request, confirmed per trip. Muscat is about 409 km from Dubai through Hatta. Riyadh, Doha and Manama are all reached through Al Ghuwaifat on the Saudi border. Send your destination, date, passengers and nationalities on WhatsApp to check a trip.

Where a car from the UAE can take you

Four GCC countries can be reached by road from the UAE. Oman shares several crossings with the UAE. Saudi Arabia has one, at Al Ghuwaifat on the E11. Qatar and Bahrain lie beyond Saudi Arabia, so those trips cross two borders.

Country Border posts from Dubai (UAE / destination) Capital by road from Downtown Dubai Passenger documents in short Car papers and availability
Oman Hatta / Al Wajajah Muscat: 409 km, 4 h 43 min GCC citizens need no visa. Citizens of 100+ countries get 14 days visa-free, with conditions. Others use the Royal Oman Police eVisa. Oman insurance and car papers. On request, confirmed per trip.
Saudi Arabia Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha Riyadh: 1,055 km, 10 h 31 min A Saudi tourist visa unless exempt: on arrival for listed nationalities, eVisa or a Saudi mission. Saudi insurance and the chauffeur’s Saudi visa. On request, confirmed per trip.
Qatar Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha, then Salwa / Abu Samra Doha: 695 km, 6 h 38 min Saudi entry for the transit. For Qatar, 102 nationalities are visa-free and GCC residents apply for the A2 visa on Hayya. Saudi insurance, and the car pre-registered on Hayya for Abu Samra. On request, confirmed per trip.
Bahrain Al Ghuwaifat / Al Batha, then the King Fahd Causeway Manama: 837 km, 8 h 21 min Saudi entry, plus a Bahrain eVisa or visa on arrival, depending on nationality. Bahrain insurance, bought in the King Fahd Causeway Jesr app. On request, confirmed per trip.

The distances and times are OSRM free-flow figures measured on 17 October 2026. They leave out traffic, fuel stops and border queues. Each country page has its city routes, and the route list further down this page shows every trip we quote.

Before you travel, check the UAE land border checklist, the cost of a cross-border chauffeur and the GCC road trip visa rules.

What “on request, confirmed per trip” means

Assure is RTA licensed in Dubai, and a trip abroad brings in more authorities. RTA’s activity card for passenger transport by luxury vehicles says an operator also deals with the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport when the work runs outside the emirate. The destination country then applies its own rules to a foreign car carrying paying passengers.

So before we quote your date, we confirm three things:

  1. Motor insurance for the car that is valid in every country on the route.
  2. The car’s papers for each border post.
  3. Permission to carry paying passengers on that route, on both sides of each border.

If one of them cannot be confirmed, you hear it on WhatsApp before anything is booked.

Do I need a visa to cross by road?

It depends on your passport and on each country you enter. Qatar and Bahrain trips cross Saudi Arabia first, so passengers need Saudi entry as well. Check every passport on each country’s official visa site before you book.

GCC citizens

Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Qatar Tourism both state that GCC citizens need no visa to enter.

UAE residents of other nationalities

  • Oman: the ministry’s second group of 24 nationalities, including India, Egypt and Jordan, gets the 14 days only with extra papers. GCC residence in an eligible profession is one route, according to the ministry. A valid visa for the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, a Schengen country or Japan is another.
  • Saudi Arabia: a GCC residence visa valid for at least 3 months, in a profession published on visitsaudi.com, lets you apply on the same terms as listed nationalities. First-degree relatives travelling with you are included.
  • Qatar: GCC residents whose passport needs a visa apply for the A2 GCC Resident visa on the Hayya platform.
  • Bahrain: the NPRA eVisa portal lists the nationalities that can apply online or get a visa on arrival. Everyone else needs a guarantor in Bahrain, such as the hotel, a Bahraini travel agent or a company.

Visitors to the UAE

  • Oman: citizens of more than 100 countries can stay up to 14 days without a visa. Each needs a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough money for the stay. The 14 days cannot be extended.
  • Saudi Arabia: the Tourist Visa Regulations give three routes, which are on arrival for listed nationalities, an eVisa or a Saudi mission. You need a passport valid for 6 months, medical insurance approved in Saudi Arabia and an address in the Kingdom.
  • At Al Batha: in March 2026 the German Embassy reported visas on arrival at the land border. It still advised applying for the eVisa first, because the crossing goes faster.
  • Holders of a used US, UK or Schengen visa, or of US, UK or EU permanent residence, can apply for the Saudi visa on the same terms as listed nationalities.
  • Qatar: 102 nationalities enter visa-free. Most others apply for an e-visa on the Hayya platform before the trip.

Leaving the UAE and coming back

At every crossing you stop twice: first at the UAE exit post, then at the entry post of the next country. In March 2026 the German Embassy reported the Oman crossings at Hatta, Mezyad and Khatmat Malaha open around the clock. They take vehicles only, so nobody crosses on foot.

The way back matters most for visitors. GDRFA Dubai’s single-entry tourist visa covers one visit of 30 or 60 days, so it does not let you back in after you leave by road. The UAE’s 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa allows stays of 90 days on each visit. If you plan to return by car, check your UAE visa before you book the return leg.

UAE residents travel on their passport, and we ask them to bring their Emirates ID as well.

What the car needs at the border

On an Assure trip, the car’s paperwork is our side of the job. You bring passports, visas and Emirates IDs. For each route we confirm these papers:

  • The UAE registration card for the vehicle.
  • The owner’s written permission to take the car out of the UAE. For a rental car entering Oman, the German Embassy notice names a certificate from the rental company.
  • Oman motor insurance. The same notice says a UAE rental car enters Oman only with extra insurance for Oman.
  • Saudi motor insurance. The embassy reported that UAE buses could buy it during border processing at Al Batha, and that the driver needed a visa.
  • Qatar and Bahrain. Qatar Tourism lists vehicle pre-registration on Hayya for Abu Samra. The King Fahd Causeway Authority sells Bahrain vehicle insurance in its Jesr app before departure.
  • Permission to carry paying passengers across each border on the route.

Which crossing your trip uses

Your pickup point and destination decide the border. Our guide to the UAE and Oman crossings, post by post covers which passports each one accepts.

  • Hatta and Al Wajajah: the usual post from Dubai and Sharjah for Sohar and Muscat. Hatta town is 109 km from Downtown Dubai, Sohar 203 km and Muscat 409 km.
  • Mezyad and Hafeet: south of Al Ain, and closer from Abu Dhabi. Muscat is about 483 km from Abu Dhabi this way, 5 h 12 min without traffic.
  • Khatmat Malaha: on the east coast, south of Fujairah and Kalba, for pickups on that coast.
  • Al Darah and Dibba: both on Oman’s land port list in Royal Oman Police Decision 195/2022, and the posts for Musandam. Khasab is 195 km from Dubai through Al Darah. For a day out rather than a transfer, see the Musandam tour from Dubai.
  • Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha: the only road crossing between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, 453 km from Downtown Dubai and 354 km from Abu Dhabi. Trips to Doha and Manama start here too.

Long days: a second driver or an overnight stop

Riyadh means 10 h 31 min at the wheel before any border queue. One chauffeur should not drive that in a single stretch. We quote Riyadh with a second driver who shares the wheel, or with an overnight stop such as Hofuf, 734 km from Dubai.

Manama is 8 h 21 min of driving and Doha 6 h 38 min. For those two, we agree the plan from your start time. A 6am start from Dubai reaches Al Ghuwaifat at about 10am.

When the road beats a flight

For one or two people with light bags, a flight to Riyadh, Doha or Manama is quicker. For Muscat, the German Embassy listed buses from Dubai in March 2026, booked through Mwasalat RTA or Al Khanjry Transport from Abu Hail. A car with a chauffeur makes more sense in these cases:

  • A family or group with heavy luggage, in one vehicle from your door to the hotel. The GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade seat 6 with 3 large cases. Compare them on our luxury SUVs with chauffeur page.
  • A trip with stops, such as Sohar on the way to Muscat.
  • A stay in Khasab, when you want the car and chauffeur in Musandam rather than a day tour.
  • Disrupted flights. In March 2026, with UAE airspace closed, the German Embassy set out the land routes into Oman and Saudi Arabia for its citizens.

Groups of up to 19 fit a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Larger groups need a coach from our partner network, subject to availability.

Why a one-way trip includes the drive back

After a one-way drop-off, the car still drives home empty: 409 km from Muscat, 1,055 km from Riyadh. If the chauffeur waits for your return, the quote covers the waiting days and an overnight stay instead of two empty legs. For the run to Oman’s capital, the Dubai to Muscat transfer page goes through the route stop by stop.

How to check a trip

Send these details on WhatsApp or in the trip ticket on this page:

  1. The destination city and your pickup address.
  2. The travel date, and the return date if you need one.
  3. The number of passengers and large bags.
  4. Each passenger’s nationality.
  5. Whether anyone holds UAE or other GCC residence.

We reply with the border plan, what we have confirmed for the car and the route, and a quote.

Questions and answers

Can I take a taxi from Dubai to Oman?

The German Embassy in the UAE described the taxi option in March 2026. It said one taxi could be hired on the UAE side for the border passage of about 3 km, then a second taxi in Oman for the 3 to 4 hour drive to Muscat. A pre-booked car with a chauffeur goes door to door instead, on request and confirmed per trip.

Can a UAE car drive to Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Vehicles cross at Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha, the only road crossing between the two countries. In March 2026 the German Embassy reported that UAE buses could enter Saudi Arabia with Saudi insurance, which could be bought during border processing, and a driver holding a visa. For an Assure trip we confirm the insurance, the chauffeur's visa and passenger-carriage permission before quoting.

Do I need a visa to cross by road?

It depends on your passport and the country. GCC citizens need no visa for Oman or Qatar. Oman lets citizens of more than 100 countries stay 14 days without a visa, with conditions. Saudi Arabia needs a tourist visa unless you are exempt. Qatar and Bahrain trips cross Saudi Arabia first, so passengers need Saudi entry as well as the destination visa.

Can you drive from the UAE to Qatar or Bahrain?

Yes, through Saudi Arabia, because neither country shares a land border with the UAE. Doha is 695 km from Dubai, through Al Ghuwaifat and Al Batha, then Salwa and Abu Samra. Manama is 837 km and ends on the 25 km King Fahd Causeway, where both border posts sit on Passport Island. Each passenger needs Saudi entry and the destination visa.

How long does the drive take to each GCC capital?

From Downtown Dubai, on OSRM free-flow figures: Muscat is 409 km and 4 h 43 min, Doha 695 km and 6 h 38 min, Manama 837 km and 8 h 21 min, and Riyadh 1,055 km and 10 h 31 min. Border queues, fuel stops and meals come on top. Riyadh needs a second driver or an overnight stop.

What should each passenger carry at the border?

A passport valid for at least 6 months, which both Oman and Saudi Arabia require, and any visa or eVisa approval. We also ask UAE residents to bring their Emirates ID. Oman's 14-day exemption asks for a return ticket, a hotel booking and health insurance. Saudi Arabia asks for approved medical insurance and an address in the Kingdom, and its border officers check hotel bookings.

Can the chauffeur wait and drive us back?

Yes, on request. Give both travel dates and where you are staying when you ask for the quote. The quote then covers the waiting days and the chauffeur's overnight stay. A return booking avoids paying for the car to drive home empty after the drop-off, then out again for the pickup.
