Dubai to Sohar taxi: private transfer

A Dubai to Sohar taxi with Assure is a private transfer, confirmed per trip. Sohar is about 205 km from Downtown Dubai through the Hatta and Al Wajajah border, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes without traffic plus time at both posts. A day return for a meeting at Sohar Port and Freezone fits in one long day.

Which border to cross for Sohar

Sohar sits on Oman’s Batinah coast, and two crossings lead there from Dubai.

To Via Distance Drive time without traffic
Sohar town Hatta, then Al Wajajah about 205 km about 2 h 30 min
Sohar town Kalba, then Khatmat Malaha about 230 km about 3 h
Sohar Port and Freezone Hatta, then Al Wajajah about 185 km about 2 h 25 min
Sohar Port and Freezone Kalba, then Khatmat Malaha about 210 km about 2 h 55 min

All four figures were measured on OSRM (OpenStreetMap road data) on 17 October 2026, starting from Downtown Dubai. Queues at the posts are on top.

The Hatta road is shorter. Past Al Wajajah it comes down out of the mountains and meets the coast road roughly 60 km north of Sohar. From that junction the port is about 37 km further on, and Sohar town about 63 km. The Hatta road and passport rules guide covers the road.

The coastal route via Khatmat Malaha goes the long way round. It crosses the mountains on the E84 to Fujairah, runs south through Kalba to the border, then follows the coast road down past Shinas. Choose it when your day starts on the east coast, or when the Hatta queue is long.

From Abu Dhabi to Sohar by road

From central Abu Dhabi, the road to Sohar goes east through Al Ain and Al Buraimi, then down the Sohar to Al Buraimi road to the coast. OSRM puts it at about 280 km and 2 hours 55 minutes without traffic, measured on 17 October 2026. Which border post you use on this road depends on the passports in the car, so we confirm it for your trip before quoting.

Opening hours and passports at both posts

On 2 March 2026 the German Embassy in the UAE reported both crossings open around the clock: Hatta and Al Wajajah, and Khatmat Malaha. No official update on the hours has appeared since. Crossing after dark or during Eid? Tell us the date and we check the post first. Both crossings are by vehicle only, and both are open to foreign passports, not just GCC ones. Your entry depends on your passport and your Oman visa, as set out below.

Business trips to Sohar Port and Freezone: planning a same-day return

Sohar town is close to the halfway point of the drive from Dubai to Muscat: about 205 km from Downtown Dubai and about 206 km from central Muscat. The port and the free zone next to it are in the Wilayat of Liwa, north of the town. Coming from Hatta, that puts them on your way in, before the town.

A day return to the port is about 370 km of driving, close to 5 hours without traffic, and four border posts. A plan that works for most meetings:

  1. Leave Dubai around 6 am, so the border is behind you before mid-morning.
  2. Hold the meeting at the port or in the free zone.
  3. Leave Sohar by mid-afternoon, so you reach Hatta in daylight and Dubai by the evening.

Ask your host in Sohar what the gate needs from visitors, such as names or passport copies in advance. Send us the same details, so the chauffeur knows which gate to use.

Hotels for an overnight stay

If the meeting runs over two days, give us the hotel name and the chauffeur drops you at its door. On OpenStreetMap, the Radisson Blu and the Sohar Beach hotel sit on the coast north of the town, on the port side. The Crowne Plaza Sohar is inland, north-west of the town. The chauffeur collects you from the hotel for the port the next morning, and the extra night is part of the quote.

Visas and documents for business visitors

Every traveller in the car needs a passport. What else they need depends on the passport:

  • GCC citizens enter Oman without a visa.
  • Visitors on Oman’s 14-day visa-free list must show a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a hotel booking and health insurance. The Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that stay cannot be extended or changed into a residence visa.
  • UAE residents who are not GCC citizens should check before the day: a Royal Oman Police spokesman has said GCC residents still need a visa.
  • Work trips. If the visit is for work, ask your Omani host which visa type covers it, then apply on the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal.

For your return to Dubai, carry what you need to re-enter the UAE: your Emirates ID and residence visa, or a UAE visa that allows another entry. The guide to the Hatta border explains the order of the checks. Oman visa for UAE residents covers residents.

Booking a chauffeur for a day return or a delegation

For a single visitor or a pair, a sedan or an SUV with the chauffeur waiting in Sohar suits most meetings. The chauffeur stays with the car through the meeting and drives you back the same day.

Delegations need more planning. Assure’s own fleet includes a Mercedes V-Class for 6 passengers and a Mercedes Sprinter for 13, and several cars can run together with one point of contact. Our van and group transport page lists the larger vehicles. Companies that send staff to Sohar often can set up a corporate account with monthly invoicing.

Each car that crosses needs its own Oman insurance and papers, and the passenger permits must cover the trip. We confirm these for every vehicle before we send the quote.

Onward to Muscat

Sohar is a natural first stop on the way to the capital. From Sohar town, central Muscat is about 206 km down the coast road, around 2 hours 20 minutes without traffic. Muscat International Airport is a little nearer, at about 199 km. The full drive is in Dubai to Muscat by road.

There is no second border on this leg, as you are already in Oman. If Muscat is the real destination, see our Dubai to Muscat transfer, which covers drop-offs from the airport to Muttrah.

Not yet. Hafeet Rail is building a 238 km railway from Sohar Port to Abu Dhabi, through Al Buraimi and Al Ain. The company says passenger trains are planned to run from Sohar to Abu Dhabi in 100 minutes. It also says the date for operations is still being worked out.

In September 2026, Oman’s transport minister told the press that trial operations should start in the fourth quarter of 2027. Passenger service would follow after that. Until then, the road is the only way to reach Sohar by land.

What the car carries across the border

The chauffeur’s car is a UAE-registered vehicle entering Oman, so it needs motor insurance valid there. The driver also carries the registration card. When the driver does not own the car, a notarised NOC from the owner goes with it. Paid passenger trips also need transport permits on both sides, which is why this route is confirmed one trip at a time.

What changes the price

Each Sohar trip gets its own quote on WhatsApp, built from the items below.

Factor Why it matters
Day return with waiting Hours of waiting in Sohar during your meeting.
One way The car still drives about 205 km back to Dubai empty.
Overnight in Sohar A room for the chauffeur and a second day of the car.
Second driver For long days with an early start and a late return.
Border, visa and insurance costs Oman cover for each car, plus any fees on either side.
Number of cars A delegation in three cars is three sets of papers.

What to send on WhatsApp

To check a Sohar trip, send the pickup address, the address in Sohar, the date, the number of passengers and their nationalities. Tell us whether each passenger lives in the UAE and whether you need a day return. For other Oman routes and border posts, see our Oman page, or the list of UAE and Oman crossings for the posts further south.

At the border into Oman

What to know before the crossing, each point checked against its source.

  • Oman lists Al Wajajah, the post facing Hatta, and Khatmat Malaha on the Kalba coast among its official land ports. Either one leads to Sohar.

    qanoon.om, checked 17 Oct 2026

  • On 2 March 2026 the German Embassy in the UAE reported both Hatta and Al Wajajah and Khatmat Malaha open around the clock, for vehicles only (not on foot).

    uae.diplo.de, checked 17 Oct 2026

  • GCC citizens need no visa for Oman. The 14-day visa-free stay for citizens of more than 100 countries cannot be extended or turned into a residence visa. Other visas for Oman, business visits included, go through the Royal Oman Police eVisa website.

    fm.gov.om, checked 17 Oct 2026

  • UAE residents without GCC citizenship should not assume visa-free entry: a Royal Oman Police spokesman said GCC residents still need a visa.

Questions and answers

How far is Sohar from Dubai?

About 205 km by road from Downtown Dubai to Sohar town through the Hatta border, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes without traffic on OSRM figures. Sohar Port and Freezone, north of the town, is a little closer at about 185 km. Add the time at the UAE exit post and the Omani entry post, which changes with the queue.

Hatta or Khatmat Malaha: which border is quicker for Sohar?

From Dubai, Hatta and Al Wajajah. It is about 205 km to Sohar that way against about 230 km through Khatmat Malaha, and roughly 30 minutes quicker without traffic. Khatmat Malaha makes sense when the trip starts on the east coast, in Fujairah, Kalba or Khor Fakkan, because it is the nearer post from there.

Is the Hafeet Rail link to Sohar running yet?

Not yet. Hafeet Rail is building a 238 km line from Sohar Port to Abu Dhabi through Al Buraimi and Al Ain, and says its operating timeline is still being set. In September 2026, Oman's transport minister said trial operations were expected in the last quarter of 2027. Until passenger trains start, the road is the way to go.

Can I go to Sohar and back to Dubai in one day?

Yes, if you start early. The round trip to Sohar Port and Freezone is about 370 km of driving, close to 5 hours without traffic, plus four border posts. That leaves room for a meeting of a few hours. Your chauffeur waits in Sohar during the meeting, and the waiting time is part of the quote.

Do business visitors need a visa for Oman?

It depends on nationality and on what you will do in Oman. GCC citizens need no visa. Oman's 14-day visa-free stay cannot be extended or turned into a residence visa. Check with your Omani host which visa type covers your work, then apply on the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal before the day of travel.

Can you carry on from Sohar to Muscat?

On request, yes. Sohar to central Muscat is about 206 km on the coast road, around 2 hours 20 minutes without traffic, through Saham, Al Khaburah, Barka and Seeb. There is no second border on this leg, because you are already in Oman. Ask for it when you book, so the quote covers both legs.
