Dubai to Muscat transfersWhat we confirm before an Oman trip goes ahead
Oman trips are on request and confirmed per trip. Before we quote a date, the car needs four things in order: insurance valid in Oman, its registration card, written permission from its registered owner, and permission to carry paying passengers across the border. The answer reaches you on WhatsApp with the quote. The UAE land border checklist lists what to carry.
For 3 passengers, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series takes 2 large cases. For up to 6, a GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes V-Class has room for 3 or 4 cases. Groups of up to 13 fit a Mercedes Sprinter.
Which border crossing to use from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah
Oman’s official list of land ports, in Royal Oman Police Decision 195/2022, includes Al Wajajah, Hafeet, Khatmat Malaha, Al Darah and Dibba. Your start point and your destination decide which one you use. Our guide to the UAE and Oman border crossings covers each post in more depth.
| Crossing | Where it is | Typical trip | What we know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatta (UAE post) / Al Wajajah (Oman post) | Past Hatta town, which is 109 km from Downtown Dubai | Dubai or Sharjah to Sohar and Muscat | Reported open around the clock in March 2026 |
| Mezyad (UAE post) / Hafeet (Oman post) | South of Al Ain city | Abu Dhabi or Al Ain into Oman | Reported open around the clock in March 2026 |
| Khatmat Malaha (Oman post) | East coast, south of Fujairah | Fujairah or Kalba to Sohar, which is 105 km from Fujairah city | Reported open around the clock in March 2026 |
| Al Darah (Oman post) | North of Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah | Ras Al Khaimah or Dubai to Khasab | Listed Oman land port; hours and passport rules confirmed per trip |
| Dibba (Oman post) | North end of the Fujairah coast | Dibba and the Musandam coast | Listed Oman land port; hours and passport rules confirmed per trip |
At every crossing you stop twice: once to leave the UAE and once to enter Oman. The crossings are for vehicles only, so nobody walks across. Other crossings sit inside Al Ain and Al Buraimi; ask us which one your passports can use before you plan a route through the city. Going to Khasab or Dibba? Read the Musandam border and visa rules before you plan the day. For Hatta, read Hatta road and passport rules.

How far each Oman city is from Dubai
| From Downtown Dubai to | Road distance | Drive time without traffic | Border used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sohar | 203 km | 2 h 27 min | Hatta / Al Wajajah |
| Khasab, Musandam | 195 km | 2 h 35 min | Al Darah |
| Muscat | 409 km | 4 h 43 min | Hatta / Al Wajajah |
| Nizwa | 421 km | 5 h 2 min | Al Ain area, crossing confirmed per trip |
| Saiq plateau, Jebel Akhdar | 465 km | 5 h 42 min | Al Ain area, then Nizwa |
| Salalah | 1,223 km | 14 h 1 min | Al Ain area, overnight stop |
These are OSRM free-flow figures measured on 17 October 2026. They leave out traffic, fuel stops and time at the two border posts. From Abu Dhabi, Muscat is about 483 km (5 h 12 min) by way of Al Ain. From Sharjah it is 415 km (4 h 44 min). The shortest roads to Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and Salalah run through Al Ain and Al Buraimi, so we name the crossing for your passports in the quote.
Where people go in Oman
- Muscat. The capital, 409 km away by the Al Batinah coast road after Al Wajajah. The Dubai to Muscat transfer page covers the run stop by stop.
- Sohar. The first large city after the Hatta crossing, 203 km from Dubai on the same coast road. See the Dubai to Sohar route for timings.
- Nizwa. The inland town of Nizwa Fort and its souk, 421 km from Dubai. OSRM routes it through Al Ain rather than Hatta.
- Jebel Akhdar. The Saiq plateau is 60 km beyond Nizwa, about 56 minutes up the mountain road. Tell us if your plan includes it, so the vehicle suits the climb.
- Musandam. Khasab is 195 km from Dubai through Ras Al Khaimah and the Al Darah crossing. Ask about a car to Khasab, or book the Musandam dhow tour instead.
- Salalah. At 1,223 km, this is a two-day drive with an overnight stop. We quote it on request only; the Dubai to Salalah by road guide covers the route and where to stop.
What each passenger needs to enter Oman
The Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets out who needs a visa. Check your passport against its list before you book. Oman visa for UAE residents covers residents.
- GCC citizens (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait) need no visa.
- Citizens of more than 100 countries can stay up to 14 days without a visa. Each needs a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough money for the stay. The 14 days cannot be extended.
- A second group of 24 nationalities, including India, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Vietnam, gets the same 14 days only with GCC residence, or with a visa or residence for the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, a Schengen country or Japan.
- Spouses and children travelling with an eligible visitor share the exemption, even on a different passport.
- Everyone else applies on the Royal Oman Police eVisa site before the trip.
UAE residents should carry their Emirates ID with their passport on the trip. If you are visiting the UAE and plan to come back by road, check that your UAE visa allows another entry before you leave.
Papers for the car at the Oman border
In March 2026 the German Embassy in the UAE noted that a rental car enters Oman only with a certificate from the rental company and extra Oman insurance. On an Assure trip, the car’s side of the border is our job. Before the booking is final, we confirm Oman cover for the vehicle, its registration card, the owner’s written permission and the paid-passenger permission for your route. Ask us for the current fees at the UAE exit post and the Oman entry post too; we confirm them for your date.
Bus, self-drive or a car with a chauffeur
- Bus. Mwasalat and RTA run a Dubai to Muscat service, and Al Khanjry Transport leaves from Abu Hail. Our Dubai to Muscat bus guide covers the stops and the border routine.
- Self-drive. A rental needs the rental company’s certificate and Oman insurance, according to the German Embassy notice. If you drive your own car, ask your insurer about Oman cover first.
- Taxi. Expect to change taxis at the border, with a second car on the Omani side for the run to Muscat.
- Car with a chauffeur. One vehicle from your door in Dubai to your hotel in Oman. The chauffeur handles both border posts with you and stops when you ask.
What sets the price of an Oman trip
- One way or return. A one-way trip still means an empty drive back to Dubai for the car.
- Oman insurance for the vehicle and any fees at the border posts.
- An overnight stop, with the chauffeur’s hotel, on Salalah and multi-day trips.
- A second driver for the longest days.
- Waiting days in Oman before the return leg.
- The vehicle: a sedan for 3, an SUV or van for 6, a Sprinter for 13.
Quotes come back on WhatsApp. To check a trip, send the Oman city, the date, the number of passengers, each passport’s nationality, whether anyone holds UAE residence, and whether you need a return. The cross-border transfers page covers Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain as well.

Questions and answers
Can I take a taxi from Dubai to Oman?
The German Embassy in the UAE described the taxi option in March 2026. A taxi could be hired on the UAE side for the passage through the border zone, then a second taxi in Oman for the 3 to 4 hour drive to Muscat. A pre-booked car with a chauffeur goes door to door instead, subject to the permits we confirm for each trip.
Which border is best from Dubai to Oman?
For Sohar and Muscat, the fastest road from Dubai crosses at Hatta on the UAE side and Al Wajajah on the Omani side: 203 km to Sohar and 409 km to Muscat on OSRM figures. For Khasab in Musandam, the road crosses at Al Darah, north of Ras Al Khaimah. From Abu Dhabi or Al Ain, the Mezyad and Hafeet crossing is closer.
Which passports need a visa to enter Oman by road?
GCC citizens do not. Citizens of more than 100 countries can stay 14 days without a visa if they carry a passport valid for 6 months, a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough money. Some of those, including Indian and Egyptian passports, also need GCC residence or a visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan or Schengen. Everyone else applies on the Royal Oman Police eVisa site.
Do I need Oman car insurance for a UAE car?
Plan on it. In March 2026 the German Embassy noted that a rental car from the UAE enters Oman only with the rental company's certificate and extra insurance for Oman. On a chauffeur trip with Assure, the car's insurance and papers are arranged on our side, so you bring passports and any visas, nothing for the car.
How far is Oman from Dubai by road?
It depends on the city. From Downtown Dubai, Khasab is 195 km (about 2 h 35 min), Sohar 203 km (2 h 27 min), Muscat 409 km (4 h 43 min) and Nizwa 421 km (5 h 2 min), on OSRM free-flow figures. Salalah is 1,223 km away and needs an overnight stop. Add time for the two border posts.
How long does the border crossing take?
Every crossing has two stops: the UAE exit post, then the Oman entry post. In March 2026 the German Embassy put the passage between them at about 3 km, including both customs stations. Time at each post depends on the queue. Where your passport needs a visa, getting the Oman eVisa before the trip saves a step at the window.
Self-drive, bus or private chauffeur, which should I choose?
Mwasalat and RTA run a bus from Dubai to Muscat, which suits a solo traveller with light luggage. Self-drive works for UAE residents whose car has Oman cover. A car with a chauffeur suits groups with luggage, families and business trips: one vehicle from your door to your hotel in Oman, with stops when you ask.
Can the chauffeur wait in Oman and drive us back?
Yes, on request. Give both travel dates and where you will stay when you ask for the quote. The quote then covers the waiting days and the chauffeur's overnight stay. One return booking also avoids paying for two empty legs, one after the drop-off and one before the pickup.
