How the evening runs from Sharjah and Ajman

Your driver collects you in the afternoon from your hotel or home. In Sharjah that covers Al Majaz, Al Khan, Al Qasba, Al Taawun, Al Nahda, Muwaileh and University City. In Ajman it covers the Corniche, Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya and Al Zorah.

The drive leaves Sharjah on Mleiha Road and joins Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) south. It then turns east on the Dubai to Hatta road (E44) towards Lahbab. The route stays off Al Ittihad Road, the main commuter road between Sharjah and Dubai.

At the desert, a 4x4 drives the dunes before sunset. You stop on a ridge for the sun going down, then move to the camp for dinner. After dinner the car drives the same roads back to your door.

This is the same evening as our Dubai desert safari. Only the pickup and the drive change, and from Al Majaz the drive is about 6 km longer than from Downtown Dubai.

How far is the desert from Sharjah and Ajman?

Free-flow drive times from OSRM on OpenStreetMap road data. Afternoon traffic on the E311 can add time, so the pickup time in your quote allows for it.

From To Road distance Without traffic
Al Majaz, Sharjah Lahbab desert camp area about 54 km about 48 min
Ajman Corniche Lahbab desert camp area about 65 km about 56 min
Sharjah Airport (SHJ) Lahbab desert camp area about 51 km about 45 min
Al Majaz, Sharjah Fossil Rock, near Mleiha about 59 km about 46 min
Al Majaz, Sharjah Al Badayer, on the Al Madam road about 62 km about 53 min
Ajman Corniche Fossil Rock, near Mleiha about 69 km about 54 min

Lahbab is a non-urban area in eastern Dubai on the border with Sharjah. Fossil Rock and Al Badayer are inside Sharjah. Our camp evening uses Lahbab. For a trip into Sharjah’s own desert, ask for a car with driver and we confirm what can be arranged.

Private car or shared seat

A shared seat puts you in a vehicle with other guests, and the pickup order follows their addresses too. A private car collects only your group, at your time, and can stop at a second address in the other emirate.

For a family of 6, a GMC Yukon or Mercedes-Benz V-Class carries everyone. Groups of up to 13 fit one Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Our guide to private and shared desert safaris sets out what changes on the night.

Want the whole day at your pace instead, with the desert at the end? Book a car with driver by the hour from Sharjah and add the camp to the plan.

Vehicle class Sedan, SUV, van or 13-seat minibus
Group size and children Seats needed and child seats on request
Pickup area Sharjah city, outer Sharjah or Ajman, and whether there are 2 pickups

Date Weekends and holiday dates fill first

Who drives on the dunes, and who should skip it

Dune driving needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows soft sand. That part of the evening runs in a 4x4 from our partner network, subject to availability. Your quote names the vehicle for each part of the trip.

We advise against the dune drive if you are pregnant, have back, neck or heart problems, or are travelling with a baby. Ask for the evening without it: you keep the drive out, the sunset and the camp dinner.

Wear loose, light clothes and sandals you can shake sand out of. Desert evenings from December to February feel cool once the sun goes down, so pack a light jacket. The guide on what to wear on a desert safari goes through it by season.

Pickup licences in Sharjah and Ajman

Assure is RTA licensed in Dubai. A safari that starts in Sharjah or Ajman is arranged on request, with a partner car where that emirate’s transport rules call for one, subject to availability. Ask us to confirm your exact area before you book. Our chauffeur service in Sharjah page covers trips inside the emirate and into Dubai.

Landing at Sharjah Airport first

Sharjah Airport (SHJ) is about 51 km from the Lahbab camp area. If your flight lands on the day of the safari, book the Sharjah Airport pickup to your hotel first, then the safari from there. Your chauffeur waits in arrivals with your name on a board.

See getting around Sharjah for pickup areas and private vs shared desert safari if you are choosing between a private and a shared group.

Landing the same day? The same booking can include your pickup from any UAE airport, with your name on a board in arrivals.

Questions and answers

How far is the desert from Sharjah and Ajman?

The Lahbab desert is about 54 km from Al Majaz in Sharjah, roughly 48 minutes without traffic, on OSRM figures. From Ajman Corniche it is about 65 km and 56 minutes. Sharjah Airport is about 51 km away. The route runs on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) and the Dubai to Hatta road (E44), so it skips the Al Ittihad Road queues into Dubai.

Is there desert inside Sharjah itself?

Yes. Sharjah's interior runs inland to Al Badayer on the Al Madam road, about 62 km from Al Majaz, and to Fossil Rock near Mleiha, about 59 km away. Our evening safari uses a camp in the Lahbab desert, which sits on Dubai's side of the border. If you want Sharjah's own desert, ask for a car with driver and we confirm what can be arranged there.

Can one car pick up guests in both Sharjah and Ajman?

Yes, with a private car. Give both addresses when you ask for a quote. Ajman and central Sharjah are about 14 km apart, around 16 minutes without traffic, so the second pickup adds little time. A GMC Yukon or Mercedes-Benz V-Class seats 6, and a 13-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter suits a larger family or a group of friends.

Who drives the 4x4 on the dunes?

Dune driving needs a 4x4 and a driver who knows soft sand, so that part of the evening runs in a 4x4 from our partner network, subject to availability. Your quote names the vehicle for each part of the trip, from the Sharjah or Ajman pickup to the camp and back. Nothing is left for you to arrange at the desert.

Is the dune drive suitable for everyone?

Not for everyone. We advise against the dune drive if you are pregnant, or have back, neck or heart problems, and for babies. Tell us when you book and we quote the evening without it, keeping the drive, sunset and camp dinner. Child seats are on request, so send each child's age with your enquiry.

Can Assure pick up from Sharjah and Ajman?

Yes, on request. Assure is RTA licensed in Dubai. Pickups that start in Sharjah or Ajman are arranged with a partner car where that emirate's transport rules call for one, subject to availability. Your quote confirms the car and who operates it before you pay anything, so ask us to confirm your exact pickup area.

How do I book a desert safari from Sharjah or Ajman?

Send a WhatsApp to +971 56 684 8148 starting 'Desert safari from Sharjah or Ajman on' with your date. Add the number of adults and children and your pickup area. Say whether you want a private car or a shared seat. The quote comes back in the same chat with the pickup time, the cars and what is included.
