Desert safari Dubai
Desert safari Dubai means an afternoon and evening in the dunes: pickup about 2 hours 30 minutes before sunset, a 4x4 dune drive, the sunset, then dinner at a desert camp. Lahbab, a main dune area, is 48 km from Downtown Dubai. Assure books it shared or private, door to door in 6 to 7 hours.

What happens on an evening desert safari
The evening is timed back from the sunset. Your driver collects you mid-afternoon, drives out of the city to the edge of the sand, and the 4x4 spends the last of the daylight on the dunes. After the sunset stop you drive on to a desert camp for dinner, and you are home by about 10 pm in winter.
Sunset moves by about 1 hour 40 minutes through the year, so the pickup moves with it. These are the times to plan around for a pickup in central Dubai.
| Month (15th) | Sunset in Dubai | Pickup to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| October | 5:52 pm | about 3:20 pm |
| December | 5:31 pm | about 3:00 pm |
| February | 6:12 pm | about 3:40 pm |
| April | 6:41 pm | about 4:10 pm |
| June | 7:10 pm | about 4:40 pm |
| August | 6:54 pm | about 4:25 pm |
Sunset times come from the NOAA Solar Calculator. Your quote gives the exact pickup for your address and date.
Where the safari camps are: Lahbab, Al Awir and Margham
Three names you will see on Dubai safari quotes are Lahbab, Al Awir and Margham, all inside Dubai emirate to the east and south-east of the city. Lahbab covers about 97 km² on the border with Sharjah, and its red dunes are a regular safari route. Al Awir sits closer in and borders Lahbab. Margham lies further south, best known as Dubai’s largest onshore gas field.
| From | Al Awir | Lahbab | Margham |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Dubai | 30 km, 28 min | 48 km, 43 min | 56 km, 49 min |
| Dubai Marina | 48 km, 42 min | 63 km, 57 min | 72 km, 61 min |
| Dubai International (DXB) | 28 km, 36 min | 47 km, 53 min | 63 km, 63 min |
| Central Sharjah | 34 km, 30 min | 57 km, 50 min | 71 km, 59 min |
Distances run by road to each area, without traffic, from OpenStreetMap routing. Camps sit out in the sand nearby, so the last stretch adds a few minutes. Your quote names the camp and the area it is in.
Who drives the 4x4
Assure’s own fleet is road cars: sedans, SUVs such as the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, and vans and minibuses up to the 19-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. None of them is a dune car. The dune drive is done in a desert 4x4 by a safari operator from our partner network, subject to availability, with a desert-trained driver. Before the first dune the driver lets air out of the tyres for grip, and the 4x4s usually drive in single file behind a lead car.
How long the dune drive itself lasts depends on the operator, so your quote states the minutes. On a December evening you reach the sand at about 4 pm and the sun sets at about 5:31 pm, so the tyre stop, the dune drive and photo stops share about 90 minutes.
That gives you three ways to book the same evening:
- Shared: a seat in a shared 4x4 that collects several hotels in turn before heading out.
- Shared camp, private car: your Assure car drives your group straight to the desert. A private 4x4 takes you over the dunes to the camp, and the car brings you home after dinner. Nobody else’s hotel is on the way.
- Fully private: your own 4x4 and driver for the whole evening, at a pickup time you choose. The private desert safari page sets out how it runs and how many fit in each car.
A shared seat depends on a shared departure running on your date, so it is offered on request.
Shared or private: what changes
| Shared seat | Private 4x4 or car | |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup | A window, with other hotels collected in turn | Your address, at the time you agree |
| In the 4x4 | Other guests up to the seats in the car | Your group only |
| Pace on the dunes | Set for the whole car | Gentler or longer if you ask |
| Price basis | Per person | Per vehicle |
| At the camp | Shared tables | Shared camp unless you book a private setup |
The camp itself is shared on both options. A private table, a private camp or a VIP setup is quoted on top.
At the camp
Camps near Dubai usually offer a short camel ride, sandboarding on a nearby dune and an evening show after dinner, often with a tanoura (whirling) dance. Dinner is normally a buffet with grilled meat and vegetarian dishes. What each camp includes, and what it charges extra for, differs, so your quote lists it.
Tell us about vegetarian, vegan or allergy needs when you book, so the camp knows before you arrive. A quad bike or dune buggy session is an extra at most camps; the quad bike page covers machines, ages and session lengths.
Age, health and child seats
- The dune drive tips the 4x4 steeply on the sand. We advise skipping it if you are pregnant or have back, neck or heart trouble.
- Children under 4 must ride in a child seat in the UAE, and children aged 10 or under, or shorter than 145 cm, may not sit in the front. Give every child’s age when you book so seats can be fitted.
- Quad bikes and buggies carry minimum ages set by each operator. Send the ages of everyone in the group with the enquiry.
- Clothing: nothing formal is needed. Covered shoulders help against the late sun, and a jumper helps after dark from December to February.
What sets the price of a desert safari
Assure does not show safari prices. The quote on WhatsApp is built from the factors below.
| Factor | Example |
|---|---|
| Shared or private | A seat priced per person, or a 4x4 or car priced per vehicle |
| Group size and car | A couple in one 4x4, or 13 guests in one Sprinter to the desert and then several 4x4s |
| Pickup area | Dubai Marina is 63 km from Lahbab; Ajman is 65 km |
| Date | A December weekend or New Year’s Eve, against a weekday in June |
| Camp level | Standard camp, private table or a VIP setup |
| Extras | Quad bike, dune buggy or extra sandboarding time |
Picking up from Sharjah or Ajman
Guests staying in Sharjah or Ajman can be collected for the same evening. Central Sharjah is 57 km from Lahbab, about 50 minutes without traffic, and Ajman is 65 km, about 55 minutes. That is close to the drive from Dubai Marina, so the pickup time is similar, and your quote adjusts it for traffic on your date. Pickups from these emirates are on request: send your address and we will confirm for your date. The Sharjah desert safari page is written for guests based in Sharjah.
Landing in Dubai first
Dubai International is 47 km from Lahbab, about 53 minutes without traffic. If you land the same morning, book the airport pickup at DXB to your hotel and leave a few hours before the safari pickup. If you would rather drive out at your own pace with stops on the way, book a car with driver by the hour and add the desert part to it.
Morning, overnight and other desert trips
The morning desert safari leaves between 7 and 8 am and is back before lunch, with no dinner. The overnight safari keeps you at the camp until after sunrise. The morning vs evening guide sets the two side by side.
How to book the evening safari
- On WhatsApp to +971 56 684 8148, or in the trip form, send the date, the adults, the children with ages and your pickup area. Say whether you want shared or private.
- The quote names the camp, the pickup time, what is included and the cancellation terms.
- Reply in the same chat to accept. The pickup details are confirmed in that chat.
Safari enquiries go to the same Assure team that runs the chauffeur cars: RTA licensed, 10+ years in Dubai, on WhatsApp and phone 24/7.

Questions and answers
What should I wear on a desert safari?
Light, loose clothes that cover your shoulders keep off the late sun on the dune drive. Wear sandals or trainers, because the sand gets into every shoe. From December to February the desert turns cold soon after sunset, so bring a jumper or light jacket for dinner at the camp. Sunglasses help when the wind lifts sand off the dune tops.
Which Dubai desert safari is best?
It depends on your group. A first visit usually suits the evening safari, because it includes the sunset and dinner. Families with small children or anyone who dislikes waiting through hotel pickups may prefer the private option. If you have evening plans, take the morning safari, which is back by lunch. For a night under the stars there is the overnight trip.
How much is the safari tour in Dubai?
Assure does not publish safari prices, because the price depends on the booking. A shared seat is priced per person. A private 4x4 or car is priced per vehicle. The pickup area, the date, the camp and any quad bike or buggy time all change the total. Send your date, group size and pickup area on WhatsApp and the quote comes back in the same chat.
How long does a desert safari take in Dubai?
An evening safari takes about 6 to 7 hours from pickup to drop-off. In December that means leaving at about 3 pm and getting back at about 10 pm. The drive out is 43 minutes from Downtown Dubai to Lahbab without traffic, and about 57 minutes from Dubai Marina. A morning safari takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Which is better, morning or evening?
The evening safari has the sunset, the camp and dinner, and the drive back is in the dark. The morning safari has emptier dunes and cooler sand in winter, with no dinner or camp show, and you are back in Dubai before lunch. Choose the evening for a full first night out, and the morning if your evenings are already taken.
Can I go to the camp without the dune drive?
Ask when you book. The dune drive pitches the 4x4 up and down steep sand, and we advise skipping it in pregnancy or with back, neck or heart trouble. Ask whether the 4x4 can take a flatter track straight to the camp. Tell us who needs the gentle route, and the quote will say whether it is possible on your date.
Do you pick up from Sharjah or Ajman?
Yes, on request. Send your address with the enquiry and we will confirm whether the pickup works on your date. Central Sharjah and Ajman are about as far from the Lahbab dunes as Dubai Marina, so expect a similar mid-afternoon pickup, set against the traffic on the day. The Sharjah desert safari page covers the trip from Al Majaz and Ajman Corniche in more detail.
