Khasab is the main town of Musandam, the part of Oman separated from the rest of the country by UAE territory. You reach it through Ras Al Khaimah, not through Hatta or Muscat. The first stretch is described in Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah.
From Downtown Dubai the drive is about 195 km and 2 h 37 min without traffic, on OSRM road data. Border formalities on the UAE and Omani sides come on top of that.

- Emirates Road (E611) into Ras Al Khaimah.
- The E18, Al Rams Road, north along the coast through Al Rams and Sha’am to the Al Darah post. That point is about 150 km and 1 h 50 min from Downtown Dubai.
- On the Omani side, the coast road from Tibat runs about 45 km through Bukha to Khasab port, roughly 50 minutes.

Which border post do you cross for Khasab?
You cross at Al Darah, just north of Sha’am. ICP, the UAE border authority, names it the Al Darah land border crossing in Ras Al Khaimah. The Royal Oman Police lists Al Darah among Oman’s land ports too, and maps label the Omani post Tibat, after the village beside it in Wilayat Bukha.
Dibba is a separate crossing on the east coast, about 147 km from Downtown Dubai. It serves the dhow days on our Musandam day trips page, a different day out from the drive to Khasab. Dibba or Khasab compares the two.
Opening hours and which passports may use Al Darah are confirmed for your date before we quote. The other land routes into Oman, from Al Wajajah near Hatta to Khatmat Malaha on the coast, are compared in our guide to the UAE and Oman crossings.
What each passenger needs at Al Darah
- A passport valid for at least 6 months. The UAE requires this for re-entry, counted from the day you come back.
- The right to enter Oman. Musandam follows Oman’s entry rules. GCC citizens need no visa. Citizens of more than 100 countries may stay up to 14 days visa-free with a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking, health insurance and enough funds. Some nationalities qualify only with GCC residence or a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, Japanese or Schengen visa. Everyone else applies on the Royal Oman Police eVisa site.
- A way back into the UAE. GCC citizens need no UAE visa. Some nationalities get a visa on arrival, and the rest need one before travel. Residents should check their residence visa is valid on the return date.
Our Musandam border and visa rules guide walks through each case. When you enquire, list every passenger’s nationality and whether they live in the UAE, so we can check the crossing for the whole group. Oman visa for UAE residents covers residents.
What the car needs to cross into Musandam
We check the car’s papers for Al Darah separately from the passengers’ documents. For a Khasab booking, we match them to the exact car and date:
- Oman cover: a motor policy valid on Omani roads for a UAE-registered car.
- Ownership: the registration card carried in the car, plus the owner’s no-objection letter when a partner supplies the car.
- Carriage: permission to take paying passengers over the border into Musandam.
A gap in any one of them means no quote for that date, and our reply names the missing item.
Is the Khasab route available?
Dubai to Khasab is on request, confirmed per trip. Searches for a private car to Khasab are few: most Musandam visitors look for a dhow day instead. We keep the route for guests who need door-to-door transport, such as a family staying several nights in Khasab or a group with diving or fishing kit.
A group of up to 6 with 3 large bags fits in one GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade from our luxury SUV range. For other routes into Oman, start with our Dubai to Oman transfers page.
What sets the price of a Khasab transfer
- A one-way drop, which still has the car cover about 195 km home to Dubai with no passengers.
- Hours waiting in Khasab, if the car stays while you spend the day on the water.
- A night in Khasab for the chauffeur, if you come back on a later day.
- Any charges at Al Darah and the car’s Omani insurance.
- A second driver, only if a long day in Khasab ends with a late drive back.
- Car size, set by your group and its kit, such as dive bags or fishing rods.
Every price is quoted on WhatsApp for your route and date.
Landing at Ras Al Khaimah instead of Dubai
If you fly into Ras Al Khaimah International, Khasab port is about 103 km away, roughly 90 km closer than from Downtown Dubai. Your chauffeur waits after customs at RKT with your name on a board: see Ras Al Khaimah airport pickups for the terminal layout.
Every other route out of the UAE, to Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain, is listed under cross-border transfers.
