Paved mountain roads or sand: what each trip needs
Ask one question first: will the wheels leave the tarmac? Hatta and Jebel Jais are both reached on paved roads, so the car is a comfort choice. Dunes are a different job.
| Trip | From Downtown Dubai, no traffic | Surface | Car that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatta Dam and Wadi Hub | About 110 km, 1 h 25 | Paved, E44 | Sedan, SUV, V-Class |
| Jebel Jais | About 154 km, about 2 h | Paved to the summit | Sedan, SUV, V-Class |
| Dune drive | Set by the safari operator | Sand | Safari operator’s 4x4 |
The distances come from OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data, measured without traffic. Add time for weekend queues on the Hatta road.

Hatta: the drive, Hatta Dam and Wadi Hub
The E44 runs from Dubai to Hatta in about 1 hour 25 minutes. The trip is a day of short stops: the dam, kayaks, the heritage site and Hatta Wadi Hub, which Visit Hatta places 3 km from the Hatta Fort roundabout, closing at 7 pm.
Hatta Kayak opens daily from 7 am to 9 pm. A single kayak is for one adult aged 16 or over, up to 110 kg, so a family with younger children needs a different plan for the water.

Our Hatta day trip fits those stops around the car, and the Hatta Dam guide covers the viewpoint.
Kayak days mean wet towels and a change of clothes. A GMC Yukon or V-Class takes that kit better than a sedan. Both are covered in our luxury SUVs and van options.

Jebel Jais: the mountain road and summit stops

Jebel Jais is about 154 km from Downtown Dubai and 45 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah city. Visit Jebel Jais states the road is fully paved and says a 4x4 is not needed. The summit is 1,934 m.
What the road asks for is calm driving. Fog or rain can cut visibility on the bends, and winter temperatures at the top can fall below zero. Pack a jacket even if Dubai is warm. The mountain is open 24 hours, but the ziplines and restaurants keep fixed hours and close in extreme weather.
The Jebel Jais day trip times the drive for your zipline slot. For stops and viewpoints, see the Jebel Jais guide.
Desert edge or dune bashing: why you need a safari 4x4
A chauffeur car is a road car. Dune driving involves letting air out of the tyres and a driver trained for sand, which is what a desert safari operator supplies in its own 4x4, often a Toyota Land Cruiser.
Assure does not run a Land Cruiser in its own chauffeur fleet. Large SUVs such as the GMC Yukon are on the roster, and other 4x4 models may be available through our partner network, subject to availability. Neither replaces the safari vehicle.
The sensible split: book the desert safari for the dunes, and keep the chauffeur car for the paved days. The private versus shared safari guide helps you choose the safari side.
Winding roads: motion sickness and seating
Jebel Jais is a road of repeated bends, and Hatta has fewer. If anyone gets car sick, ask for the front passenger seat, keep the horizon in view and eat lightly beforehand.
Mention it when you book. Your driver then takes the bends gently and the seating is set before pickup.
Combining a private tour with a chauffeur car
You can book a private tour as a single day with the chauffeur car waiting between stops. Match the car to the group:
| Group | Car | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Sedan such as the S-Class | Count bags before choosing |
| Up to 6 | GMC Yukon or Mercedes-Benz V-Class | V-Class takes more bags |
| 7 to 13 | 13-seat Mercedes Sprinter | Second vehicle for extra luggage |
Our seats and luggage chart lists each car. For other pairings, see the V-Class versus Sprinter comparison, the G-Class versus Range Rover guide and our guide to the best chauffeur car for long drives. Start from the full chauffeur car guide, or browse day trips from Dubai.
