School run drivers in Dubai: what parents should check before booking

A private school run in Dubai works best with a licensed limousine company or a sponsored driver of your own, never an unlicensed car. Check the driver's identity, a child seat for younger children, the handover at the school gate and a backup for sick days. Assure arranges school runs as part of a private driver plan.

Dubai regulates school buses closely. Executive Council Regulation No. 2 of 2008 and RTA’s 2015 bylaw cover school buses, their drivers and the operators RTA authorises to run them.

A family car or a licensed limousine carrying your own children is a different case. No RTA text we found bars it. In August 2026 RTA said it was supporting school mobility through e-hail limousine operators, naming Careem School Rides, Uber Teens and BOLT School. That makes licensed limousine transport a recognised option.

Two practical rules follow:

  • Use a licensed limousine company, or a driver you sponsor yourself. Not an unmarked private car.
  • Tell your school who is collecting your child. Schools set their own gate rules.

To check a company’s licence, see what an RTA limousine licence means.

School bus or private driver: what are the trade-offs?

School bus Private driver
Route Fixed, shared with other pupils Door to door, your timing
Pickup time Set by the route Set by you
Who is in the vehicle Other pupils and a conductor Your children, the driver
Extra errands None Can be added to the plan
Cost basis Per child Your hours and the car

A bus suits a long, regular route. A private driver suits families with children at two schools, early clubs after school, or a parent who works from a fixed address. See our private driver service for how a plan is built.

Which child seats does your child need?

Dubai Police describe the rule this way: a protection seat for every child under four, and no front seat for a child aged 10 or below, or under 145 cm. The fine is AED 400. The UAE government’s road safety page points to Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, in force since 29 March 2025, so check the current wording with the Ministry of Interior.

Ask the company to put the seat type in the quote: infant seat, forward-facing seat or booster. Ask who fits it. Our guide to child car seats in the UAE covers each type.

What should you check before the first day?

  1. The driver’s name and ID. Ask for a photo before the first run.
  2. The car. Model, colour and plate number.
  3. The company’s licence. An RTA permit for luxury passenger transport.
  4. A number that answers. Not a switchboard that closes at 6 pm. Assure answers on WhatsApp and phone 24/7.
  5. A meeting. Meet the driver once, with your child, before the first morning.
  6. The school. Name the driver to the school office.

How does handover work at the school gate?

Agree this in writing with the school and the driver:

  • where the car stops, and for how long;
  • who walks the child to the gate, and until what point;
  • who is allowed to collect, and what the driver shows the staff;
  • what happens if your child is not at the gate.

Give the driver and the school one call-back step for any change, such as a password or a message from your own number. A last-minute change by a stranger should never be accepted.

What happens when the driver is sick or the car breaks down?

This is where a company and a single sponsored driver differ. A company with a 24/7 line can reassign the run and send a replacement car. With your own driver, you hold the cover.

Ask for the replacement terms before you sign: how fast it arrives, whether you meet the replacement first, and who tells the school. The same terms belong in a monthly driver quote, and our monthly private driver page shows how Assure structures a plan.

Term-time traffic around Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Al Sufouh

The peak Salik rate is AED 6 per pass, from 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. Those hours are your school run, so a route over Sheikh Zayed Road costs more at drop-off and pickup than at lunch. Ask whether Salik is in the monthly figure.

RTA’s 2026-27 measures also added taxis in several school zones at peak times and a Yango school pooling scheme in Al Barsha. Ask the driver to confirm the drop-off point your school allows, and the time to leave, before the first day.

For weekend and holiday trips with the same driver, see car with driver by the hour or day. For everything else about hiring, start at hiring a chauffeur in Dubai.

Questions and answers

Is a private car school run legal in Dubai?

Dubai's school transport rules, Executive Council Regulation No. 2 of 2008, are written around school buses and their RTA-authorised operators. No RTA text we found bars a licensed limousine carrying one family's children, and RTA's 2026-27 support names e-hail limousine services. Confirm with your school and RTA, and never use an unlicensed car.

What is the safest private school transport in Dubai?

A licensed provider with a named driver, a child seat fitted for younger children, a seat belt on every child and a clear handover at the gate. RTA's 2026-27 school measures make seat belts mandatory on school buses, ride-pooling and ride-hailing journeys. Ask any private provider to meet the same standard.

Do children need a car seat in a chauffeur car in Dubai?

Yes for young children. Dubai Police describe the rule as a protection seat for every child under four, and no front seat for a child aged 10 or below or under 145 cm, with a AED 400 fine. A company that offers child seats should confirm the type and fitting in your quote, not on the morning.

Can I use a chauffeur for my child's school run in Dubai?

Yes, parents do. A private driver plan covers a fixed morning drop-off and afternoon pickup, often with other errands in between. The driver should be introduced to you and to the school beforehand, and your child should know the name and the car. Assure arranges this under its private driver service.

What should I check before the first day?

Ask for the driver's name, photo or ID, the car model and plate, a number that is answered at pickup, and the company's licence. Meet the driver once before the first run. Tell the school who is collecting your child, and agree a password or call-back step for any change of person.

What happens if the driver is sick or the car breaks down?

Your quote should state it. Ask how quickly a replacement driver and car arrive, whether the replacement is introduced to you before pickup, and who calls the school. A company with a 24/7 line can reassign the run. A single self-sponsored driver leaves you to find cover yourself.

Is a private driver cheaper than a school bus?

Usually not. A school bus is priced per child on a shared route, while a private driver is priced for your hours and car. The trade-off is control: your own pickup time, your own door, and the driver can also cover other errands in the day. Ask for a quote on your actual school hours.
