Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Dubai? Uber vs Careem vs RTA taxi

In Dubai only the RTA taxi runs on a published tariff: AED 5 to start a street hail by day, AED 9 to AED 13 through an app and an AED 12 minimum. Uber and Careem price their own car classes and show the fare before you book. Compare that quote with the taxi tariff for the same trip.

Which is cheaper in Dubai: Uber, Careem or a taxi?

Whether Uber is cheaper than a taxi in Dubai depends on the trip, because the three use different pricing and there is no single answer.

  • RTA taxi, hailed or from a rank. Runs on RTA’s public tariff: AED 5 to start by day, AED 5.50 after 10 pm, then distance and waiting on the meter.
  • RTA taxi booked in an app. Same meter, higher start: AED 9 to AED 13. S’hail, Careem’s Hala Taxi, Bolt, Zed and Yango all book these. Uber links to an Uber Taxi option too.
  • Uber or Careem private car. The app sets the price for each car class and shows it before you confirm. Uber notes that flat rates and minimum fees may apply.

So the taxi is the only option whose rules you can read in advance. Whichever you pick, use a licensed car: our guide to licensed and illegal taxis in the UAE shows how to tell them apart. The app price can be lower or higher than the meter on any given trip. It moves with demand, while the taxi tariff only moves with RTA’s published time bands.

Same trip, three ways to pay

Take a weekday evening ride from DXB Terminal 1 to Dubai Mall. It is about 14 km by road and 15 minutes without traffic, measured with OpenStreetMap routing.

Taxi from the DXB rank Taxi booked in an app (in the city) Uber or Careem car
Who sets the price RTA tariff, on the meter RTA tariff, on the meter The app, per car class

Traffic 50 fils per waiting minute 50 fils per waiting minute Part of the app’s estimate

At the terminal itself, the rank taxi is the simpler choice, because RTA’s pages do not spell out how an app-booked taxi is charged at the airport.

We have not printed live app quotes here. They change by the minute, and a figure copied today would mislead you next week.

The practical test takes 30 seconds. Open both apps, note the quote for your car class, and compare it with AED 20 plus about 14 km on the meter.

What car classes do Uber and Careem offer in Dubai?

Careem lists four ride types on its UAE ride page:

  • Comfort: its everyday premium ride for commutes and short trips.
  • Executive: Careem’s premium class above Comfort.
  • Max: a larger car for up to six people.
  • Kids: a car with a child seat, where the captain helps with the buckles.

Uber’s Dubai page names UberXL, a van or SUV for up to 6 people. It also links to Uber Taxi. One account can order up to 3 cars in a row for a bigger group, and you can book a ride for someone else.

Careem and Uber are linked. Uber completed its USD 3.1 billion purchase of Careem on 2 January 2020. Both brands kept their own apps and services, which is why they still price the same trip differently.

Can you use Uber or Careem at DXB and DWC?

At Dubai International (DXB), yes. Dubai Airports confirms Uber, Careem and Bolt work there. Book once you have your bags, then follow the signs to the app pickup point. Taxis from Dubai Taxi Company wait at ranks in each terminal, 24 hours a day.

There is no private pick-up area at the DXB arrivals kerb. Dubai Airports directs anyone collecting a passenger to the terminal car park instead.

At Dubai World Central (DWC), the airport’s own transport page names Dubai Taxi Company for taxis and Bolt for taxi or limousine bookings. It does not mention Uber or Careem, so check the app before you rely on it there.

Our guide to taxi fares from Dubai’s airports covers each terminal in more detail.

Peak pricing, waiting and cancellation charges

The taxi side is predictable. App-booked taxis start at AED 13 instead of AED 9 from 8 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm, Monday to Thursday. On Fridays the AED 13 band runs from 4 pm to midnight. RTA also warns that fares may change at peak hours, at event venues and on New Year’s Eve.

App car prices move with demand. Expect them to climb when thousands book at once, such as the end of a concert at Coca-Cola Arena. Each app sets its own waiting and cancellation fees. Read them on the booking screen, because they differ between Uber and Careem.

Waiting in a metered taxi costs 50 fils a minute. A 20-minute crawl adds AED 10 to the meter.

Groups, luggage and child seats

Under UAE traffic rules, any child under 4 needs a protection seat. Children up to 10 years old, and any child under 145 cm, ride in the back. Breaking either rule carries an AED 400 fine.

  • One family, one child under 4: Careem Kids lists a child seat. Uber’s Dubai page does not mention one, and you cannot count on a rank taxi having one.
  • Five or six people: Careem Max and UberXL take up to six. At the airport, a van taxi starts at AED 25.
  • Six people with checked bags: this is where apps struggle. A 6-seat van such as a Mercedes V-Class carries 4 large cases with every seat filled. Our guide to 7-seater chauffeur cars compares the options.

Which option suits which trip

Trip What usually works Why
A 3 km hop in Downtown Street taxi AED 5 start, though the AED 12 minimum will apply
DXB to a hotel, 1 or 2 bags Rank taxi or an app car Compare the app quote with AED 20 plus the meter
Weekday 8 am meeting Street taxi or a car already booked App taxis start at AED 13 in the morning peak
Family with a child under 4 Careem Kids or a pre-booked car The law requires a child seat
Six people with suitcases Pre-booked van App cars for six rarely take six large cases
Leaving a big event at night A car booked in advance App prices rise with demand at closing time
Day trip to Abu Dhabi Quoted transfer or car with driver 139 km each way, plus the Ghantoot gate

When to pre-book a chauffeur instead of using an app

An app is quick for one trip with light bags. A pre-booked car makes more sense in four cases.

  1. Landing with family or for business. An Assure airport transfer has the chauffeur in the arrivals hall with your name on a board, ready to walk you to the car.
  2. A day with several stops. A car with driver by the hour waits at each stop, so there is no new booking between meetings.
  3. Trips to Abu Dhabi. The Ghantoot toll gate on the road from Dubai charges AED 4 at every hour since 4 May 2026. A quoted transfer covers the whole run. Once you are there, getting around Abu Dhabi covers the capital’s own taxis and apps.
  4. Events and late nights. The car is already booked when app prices rise.

Assure holds an RTA licence, and the WhatsApp and phone lines are staffed 24/7. Quotes depend on the route and the car, and a chauffeur service quote comes back on WhatsApp.

For the full cost breakdown, read chauffeur, taxi or Uber in Dubai. The taxi meter itself is explained in Dubai taxi fares. Metro, tram and abra options are in how to get around Dubai, and the wider trip in the Dubai travel guide.

Questions and answers

Is Uber cheaper than an RTA taxi in Dubai?

There is no fixed answer, because Uber prices each trip in the app. What is fixed is the taxi side: AED 5 to start a street hail by day, AED 12 minimum, 50 fils a minute of waiting, plus the meter's distance charge. Open the app, note the quote for your trip, and set it against that tariff before you confirm.

Is Uber or a taxi cheaper from Dubai Airport?

A DXB rank taxi starts at AED 20 for a regular car, or AED 25 according to Dubai Airports' own page, then runs the meter. Uber, Careem and Bolt all work at DXB, with signed pickup points, and show their price before you book. With one or two bags, compare the app quote against the AED 20 start plus distance.

Is Careem the same company as Uber?

Uber bought Careem in a USD 3.1 billion deal that closed on 2 January 2020. The release said both would keep their own regional services and independent brands. In Dubai that means two separate apps, with different car classes and prices, so it is worth checking both for the same trip.

Can I book an RTA taxi through Careem?

Yes. RTA lists Careem as an e-hail channel for its taxis, under the name Hala Taxi. A taxi booked that way runs on the meter with the app starting fare: AED 9 off-peak, AED 13 at the weekday peaks and AED 10 overnight, with a minimum fare of AED 13.

Which app works for a group of six in Dubai?

Careem Max and UberXL each take up to six people. Check the bag space, because six adults with checked suitcases rarely fit in one car. At Dubai's airports, a van taxi from the rank starts at AED 25. For six people with full luggage, a pre-booked van with a chauffeur is the surer option.

Do Uber and Careem offer child seats in Dubai?

Careem lists a Kids ride type with a child seat, and its captains help with the buckles. Uber's Dubai page does not mention child seats. UAE rules require a protection seat for children under 4 and keep children aged 10 or under, or under 145 cm, out of the front seat.

Which taxi apps does RTA list for Dubai?

RTA's taxi service page lists S'hail, RTA's own app, plus Careem (Hala Taxi), Bolt, Zed and Yango as e-hail channels. Uber's Dubai page also links to an Uber Taxi option. Any metered taxi booked through an app starts at AED 9 to AED 13, depending on the day and the hour.
