Chauffeur, taxi, Uber or Careem in Dubai: which fits your trip?

For one short hop inside Dubai, an RTA-metered taxi is usually the lowest-cost licensed ride, and Uber or Careem add a choice of car class. A pre-booked chauffeur from Assure costs more per trip but suits DXB arrivals with luggage, days with several stops, business schedules and trips between emirates. Quotes come on WhatsApp, 24/7.

How do Dubai taxis, ride-hailing apps and chauffeurs differ?

Dubai has four licensed ways to be driven, and they differ in how you book and who sets the price. Taxis run on an RTA meter. Ride-hailing apps sell car classes at the app’s own price. Limousine and chauffeur companies charge a tariff that RTA requires to sit above the taxi tariff.

Option How you get one How the price is set What it suits
RTA-metered taxi, such as Dubai Taxi’s red-roof cars Street hail in safe areas, a rank, or the S’hail, Careem (Hala) and Bolt apps The meter: AED 5 to start on the street by day, then AED 2.45 a km Short hops with light bags
Ride-hailing car class: Uber Lux, UberXL, Careem Premium The Uber or Careem app The app’s price for that class One trip in a larger or smarter car
Dubai Taxi limousine The Bolt app, 800 88088, or its ranks at Dubai Airport, Dubai Mall, Global Village and Atlantis AED 25 open meter, then AED 3.90 a km A one-way ride in a black car
Pre-booked chauffeur WhatsApp, phone or a booking form, before the day A quote for the route or the hours, agreed in writing Arrivals, multi-stop days, other emirates

The chauffeur is the only option where one driver stays with you and the car between stops. For how hourly hire and fixed transfers work, start with our guide to hiring a chauffeur in Dubai.

Is Uber or a taxi cheaper in Dubai?

On the same trip, a metered taxi is usually the lower fare. The reason is a rule. RTA’s permit conditions for luxury passenger transport say the tariff a limousine company collects must be higher than the taxi tariff. Uber’s Dubai driver rules require a registration card for an RTA-approved limousine, so its rides sit in that tier too.

The taxi meter, from Dubai Taxi’s published tariff:

  • Street hail: AED 5 to start from 6 am to 10 pm, AED 5.50 from 10 pm to 6 am.
  • Booked in Bolt, S’hail or Careem: AED 9 to start off-peak and AED 10 overnight. On weekdays it is AED 13 from 8 am to 10 am and from 4 pm to 8 pm.
  • Every taxi: AED 2.45 a km, a minimum fare of AED 12 on the street or AED 13 by app, and waiting at 50 fils a minute.
  • Extras: Salik toll gates, and AED 20 when the route passes through Sharjah.

Dubai Taxi adds that fares can change at peak hours, at event venues and on New Year’s Eve. The full fare tables with worked trips are in the Dubai taxi fares guide. For app against app on one route, see Uber vs Careem vs RTA taxi.

What are Uber Lux, UberXL and Dubai Taxi limousines, legally?

They are limousines in the legal sense: a licensed company’s car with a professional driver. Uber’s UAE vehicle rules describe Uber Lux cars as “RTA approved Limousine Registered Luxury Vehicles”, built in 2021 or later. Examples given are the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class or E-Class. UberXL takes RTA-approved limousine SUVs and minivans with at least 5 passenger seats.

Uber also says cars approved by RTA, ITC in Abu Dhabi or SRTA in Sharjah are accepted “in their registered cities only”. A Dubai limousine works under a Dubai permit.

Dubai Taxi runs its own limousine fleet of Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz Vito, Toyota Previa and Tesla Model S and Model X cars. You cannot hail one on the road. At Dubai airports it charges AED 3.90 a km, against AED 2.62 for an airport taxi. That is close to 50% more per kilometre.

Careem sells Premium rides, and Premium Max for up to 6 people. Uber bought Careem in a deal that closed on 2 January 2020, but the two still run separate apps, so check both. What the licence behind these cars means for you is set out in what an RTA limousine licence covers. The car types, from the Lexus ES to the V-Class, are in types of limousine cars in Dubai.

Which is best from DXB arrivals?

All three work at Dubai International, but each starts from a different spot.

  • Taxi: Dubai Taxi cars wait 24/7 at ranks in each terminal. Dubai Taxi lists an airport starting fare of AED 20, or AED 25 for a van, then AED 2.62 a km. The Dubai Airports website quotes AED 25 to start.
  • Uber, Careem or Bolt: book in the app, then follow the signs to the ride-hailing pickup point.
  • Pre-booked chauffeur: your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a board with your name. Dubai Airports has no pick-up area at Arrivals, so drivers collecting passengers use the terminal car park.

Terminal 3 to Dubai Marina is about 40 km by road, around 48 minutes without traffic. On the airport meter that comes to roughly AED 125 before Salik. For 1 or 2 people with light bags, the rank is metered and needs no booking.

Pre-book when you land late with children, carry 4 or more large cases, or need someone waiting for a guest you will not meet yourself. Fares by destination are in the Dubai airport taxi fares guide. Terminal-by-terminal pickup details are on the DXB transfers page, and Assure runs the same meet and greet at every UAE airport.

Which works best for a full day with several stops?

Taxis win on fare for a sightseeing day. An hourly chauffeur wins on time, and on whatever you carry between stops. The worked day below shows the size of the gap.

A four-stop day costed: taxis vs an hourly chauffeur

The day starts and ends at a Dubai Marina hotel, on a weekday between 10 am and 4 pm. Each leg is one taxi at Dubai Taxi’s published rates. Distances and times are OSRM road figures without traffic.

Leg Road distance Drive time without traffic Street-hail meter App-booked meter
Dubai Marina to Dubai Mall, Downtown 20.9 km 20 min about AED 56 about AED 60
Dubai Mall to Al Fahidi, Bur Dubai 9.7 km 11 min about AED 29 about AED 33
Al Fahidi to Mall of the Emirates 22.2 km 22 min about AED 59 about AED 63
Mall of the Emirates to Dubai Marina 11.5 km 14 min about AED 33 about AED 37
Day total 64.3 km 67 min about AED 178 about AED 194

Street-hail legs use the AED 5 daytime start and app legs the AED 9 off-peak start, both at AED 2.45 a km. Any Salik gates on the route come on top.

Dubai Taxi publishes its own limousine rental with a driver: AED 800 for 6 hours and AED 900 for 8 hours. It asks for 45 minutes’ notice. Assure quotes hourly hire for the hours and the car you choose, on WhatsApp.

On fare alone, the four taxis cost far less. The hourly car earns its price when:

  • Shopping bags from Dubai Mall stay locked in the boot while you walk round Al Fahidi.
  • You are 5 or 6 people, so the day needs one van instead of 2 taxis.
  • Legs fall between 4 pm and 8 pm, when the app start fare rises to AED 13.
  • You would otherwise wait for a taxi or an app car at every exit.
  • A child seat goes in once in the morning and stays in the car.

Plan a day like this as a car with driver by the hour.

Which is best for families with car seats and big luggage?

RTA and Dubai Police require a child seat for children under 4. Children aged 10 or under, or shorter than 145 cm, may not sit in the front. Breaking the rule carries an AED 400 fine, so plan the seat before you plan the fare.

  • Taxi: Careem’s Hala Kids books a Dubai taxi with an ISO-fixed child seat and a 5-point harness. Hala Max takes groups of up to 6 with extra luggage space.
  • Ride-hailing: Careem’s Kids ride includes a child seat.
  • Chauffeur: list each child’s age and weight when you book, and ask us to confirm the seats for your car.

For luggage, count large cases, not people. In Assure’s own fleet, the Lexus ES 300h takes 3 passengers and 2 large cases. The GMC Yukon takes 6 passengers and 3 large cases. The Mercedes-Benz V-Class takes 6 passengers with 4 large cases and 2 cabin bags. A family of 4 with 4 large cases fits the V-Class, while the Lexus holds half that luggage.

How to compare fares before you book

RTA’s S’hail app books Dubai taxis, and so do Careem, through Hala, and Bolt. To compare those with the car-class apps and a chauffeur, run the same trip through four steps:

  1. Find the road distance for your trip in a map app.
  2. Price the taxi: the start fare plus AED 2.45 a km, or AED 20 plus AED 2.62 a km from the airport. Add any Salik gates, and the AED 20 Sharjah charge if your route crosses Sharjah.
  3. Enter the same pickup and drop-off in Uber and Careem, and note the price for the car class you need.
  4. Send the route, date, times, passengers and bags to a chauffeur company, and ask for a written quote for the whole car.

Looking for the lowest app fare? A taxi booked through S’hail, Careem Hala or Bolt runs on the RTA taxi meter, so it usually costs less than the limousine classes in Uber and Careem. Compare like with like. Put UberXL against the airport van taxi, and Uber Lux against a chauffeur sedan.

Quick decision table

Your trip Usually fits Why
One hop across town with a small bag RTA taxi Public meter, AED 12 minimum on the street
1 or 2 people landing at DXB in daytime with light bags Taxi rank or an app Ranks in every terminal, no booking needed
A late landing with children and 4 large cases Pre-booked chauffeur in a van Name board in arrivals, seats and luggage space confirmed
A child under 4 on a short city ride Careem Hala Kids, or a chauffeur with the seat confirmed RTA requires a child seat under 4
4 or more stops with shopping Hourly chauffeur The car waits and holds your bags
Back-to-back meetings or a VIP guest Chauffeur on a company account Same driver all day, one monthly invoice
Dubai to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or another emirate Taxi on the meter, or a chauffeur on a fixed quote Dubai Taxi drives to other emirates; a chauffeur fixes the price first

For business travel: back-to-back meetings, VIP guests and company billing

A typical client day shows where apps get awkward. You land at DXB Terminal 3 and go to DIFC (19.5 km). Then you go on to the World Trade Centre (2.7 km), Business Bay (6.5 km) and Dubai Media City (18.0 km). Finally you return to Terminal 3 (37.3 km). That is about 84 km in 5 legs, with 5 waits for a car and 5 receipts.

  • Apps: Uber’s UAE site offers Uber for Business with monthly billing and limits on ride type, time and place. Careem for Business sends one consolidated monthly bill and charges a service fee.
  • Taxis: each leg is a new car and a new receipt, and the meter restarts each time.
  • Chauffeur: one car and one driver for the whole day. Laptops and samples stay in the car between meetings. A VIP guest is met in arrivals and welcomed personally by the chauffeur.

Assure runs corporate accounts with monthly invoicing for companies that book often. See corporate chauffeur accounts for how they work, or our limousine service for a VIP arrival in a first class sedan.

Assure is RTA licensed, has been in business for more than 10 years and answers WhatsApp and phone 24/7. For hourly hire, airport runs and days between emirates, see our chauffeur service.

Questions and answers

Is it cheaper to use Uber or a taxi in Dubai?

For the same trip, a metered RTA taxi is usually the lower fare. RTA requires licensed limousine tariffs to sit above the taxi tariff, and Uber's Dubai cars must carry RTA limousine registration. A street taxi starts at AED 5 by day and charges AED 2.45 a km. Check the app price before you confirm, because it is set by the app, not the meter.

Is Uber available at Dubai Airport?

Yes. Dubai Airports says Uber, Careem and Bolt all operate at Dubai International. Book in the app once you have your bags, then follow the signs to the ride-hailing pickup point. Dubai Taxi cars also wait 24/7 at ranks in each terminal. Dubai Taxi lists a starting fare of AED 20, or AED 25 for a van, then AED 2.62 a km.

How do I book a taxi in Dubai?

Hail a red-roof taxi on the street in a safe area, join the queue at a rank, or book through RTA's S'hail app, Careem (its Hala taxi service) or Bolt. You can also call Dubai Taxi on 800 88088. An app booking starts at AED 9 to AED 13 depending on the hour, against AED 5 for a daytime street hail.

Is a private driver worth it in Dubai?

For one short hop, no: a metered taxi costs less. A private driver pays off on a day with several stops, a late arrival with children and 4 or more large cases, or a schedule of meetings. On those days the car waits for you, your bags stay inside it and the price is agreed in writing before the day starts.

Should I hire a driver for the day or use taxis for sightseeing?

Cost it first. A day from Dubai Marina to Dubai Mall, Al Fahidi and Mall of the Emirates and back covers about 64 km. On the taxi meter that is roughly AED 178 to AED 194 before Salik. Dubai Taxi's own limousine rental lists AED 800 for 6 hours. Hire a driver when shopping, small children or a group of 5 or 6 make four taxi rides awkward.

Can children ride in a Dubai taxi without a car seat?

Not under the age of 4. RTA and Dubai Police require a child seat for children under 4, and children aged 10 or under, or shorter than 145 cm, may not sit in the front. Careem's Hala Kids taxi comes with an ISO-fixed child seat. With a chauffeur, give each child's age and weight when you book so the seats can be confirmed for your car.

Uber for Business or a chauffeur account for company travel?

Uber for Business and Careem for Business both offer monthly billing and let a company set rules for staff rides, which suits single trips across town. A chauffeur account suits days with several meetings, VIP guests and airport arrivals, because one driver stays with the car all day. Assure runs corporate accounts with monthly invoicing.
