Best areas to stay in Dubai with kids: beaches, space and short drives

Families usually do best on Palm Jumeirah for resort pools and Aquaventure, in JBR or Dubai Marina for a walkable beachfront, or on Jumeirah for calmer public beaches. Downtown suits sightseeing trips. The deciding factor is often the drive to the park you plan to visit: Dubai Parks and Resorts is 29 to 49 km from these areas.

Which Dubai area is best for a family holiday?

There is no single best district. Dubai’s family attractions are spread across 50 km of coast, from the water parks on the Palm to the theme parks near Jebel Ali. The useful question is how many days you will spend on the beach, how many in a park, and who will be pushing a pushchair.

Area Best for Metro Weak point
Palm Jumeirah Resort pools, Aquaventure, private beach None Long drives to everything off the Palm
JBR and Dubai Marina Walkable beach, cafes, tram Red Line and Dubai Tram Longer ride to DXB, 32 to 36 km
Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim Calm public beaches, space None Few restaurants on foot
Downtown Dubai Mall, the Fountain, sights Red Line Beach is 11 km away

Palm Jumeirah: resorts and Aquaventure

If your children want water slides, a stay at Atlantis puts Aquaventure on site. Other resorts on the trunk and crescent have private beaches and kids’ clubs. You rarely need to leave the hotel, which helps with toddlers.

The cost is distance. Atlantis is 36 to 40 km from DXB, and the island has no Metro. A trip to Dubai Parks and Resorts is 39 km, and to Global Village 28 km, both without traffic. Our DXB to Palm Jumeirah guide has the airport run.

JBR and Dubai Marina: beach, promenade and the tram

JBR gives you an open beach with a row of cafes and shops directly behind it on The Walk. The Marina promenade is a few minutes away. The Red Line has stations at Dubai Marina and JBR, and the Dubai Tram links the area to Sobha Realty and the Red Line.

This is the family area with the shortest drives to the theme parks. Dubai Parks and Resorts is about 29 km away, IMG Worlds of Adventure 26 to 27 km. See DXB to Dubai Marina for the airport leg.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim: calmer beaches near Burj Al Arab

This stretch of Jumeirah Beach Road has public beaches, including Kite Beach with a children’s play area, and views of Burj Al Arab. Streets are wide and buildings are low. Restaurants are by car, not on foot, and the Metro does not run here.

Kite Beach is 22 to 25 km from DXB, so it is the shortest airport run of the three beach areas.

Downtown: sights first, beach by car

Downtown works for a four-night stay of sightseeing: the Dubai Mall aquarium and shops, the Dubai Fountain in the evening, and the Burj Khalifa. The Red Line stops at Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall. Kite Beach is 11 km away, which is about 14 minutes without traffic, and theme parks are 23 to 49 km away. Our Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina guide compares it with the Marina for any trip.

Global Village is seasonal and closes for part of the year, so read our Global Village timings before you plan a day around it. Check each park’s own site for opening days.

Getting around with children: car seats, strollers and vans

UAE rules, as explained by Dubai Police and published by RTA, say children under four need a protection seat, and a child aged 10 or below, or shorter than 145 cm, may not ride in the front. Our child car seats guide covers taxis and how to book a seat.

On the Metro, each train has a cabin for women and children, and a general cabin. RTA allows two suitcases per passenger, which does not suit a family of five with a pushchair. A van is simpler. Browse our van and group transport and the fleet, available through our partner network, subject to availability. Our airport transfers confirm which child seats we can supply when you book.

Questions and answers

Which Dubai area is best for a family holiday?

Palm Jumeirah suits families who want a resort with pools and Aquaventure at Atlantis. JBR and Dubai Marina suit families who want a beach and cafes on foot. Jumeirah suits families who want calm public beaches. Pick by the activity you will repeat daily, because the drive to theme parks adds up over a week.

What is the best beach area in Dubai for families?

JBR has an open beach with The Walk directly behind it, so food and toilets are close. Kite Beach on Jumeirah has a play area and more space. Resorts on the Palm have private beaches. We have not checked lifeguard hours, so confirm them with Dubai Municipality or your hotel for your dates.

How far is Dubai Parks and Resorts from the main family areas?

It is the farthest park: about 29 km and 26 minutes from JBR, 29 km from the Marina, 39 km from Atlantis The Palm and 49 km from Downtown, without traffic. It lies south-west of Dubai Marina, close to Jebel Ali. Expect longer at peak, and allow for a long day with children.

Do children need car seats in Dubai?

UAE rules say children under four need a protection seat, and a child aged 10 or below, or shorter than 145 cm, may not sit in the front. Taxis may not carry seats. Our child car seats guide explains the rule and what to send when you book a transfer.

Can I use the Dubai Metro with children?

Yes. Each train has a cabin for women and children, and a general cabin where families travel together. RTA lets each passenger carry two suitcases, stowed in the luggage area. A pushchair and bags on a rush-hour train is hard, so a car is simpler for the airport run and for park days.

Is Downtown Dubai good for kids?

For a short stay, yes. The Dubai Fountain, Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa are within walking distance. The catch is the beach, which needs a drive of about 11 km to Kite Beach, and the theme parks, which are 23 to 49 km away. Choose Downtown for sightseeing, not beach time.

What size vehicle does a family of five or six need?

Five or six people with bags need a van or MPV, not a sedan. Our van and group transport lists the options, available through our partner network, subject to availability. Send the number of children, their ages, and the number of cases, and we confirm the vehicle on WhatsApp.
