Do you need a transit visa for a Dubai layover?
Not always. The UAE Government portal says you need a pre-arranged transit visa if you are not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry, and you intend to leave the airport.
Three cases are simple:
- You stay airside. No visa. Your bags are checked through, and you wait in the terminal.
- Your passport qualifies for entry. Read our guide to the UAE visa on arrival.
- Your passport does not, and you want the city. Ask your airline for a transit visa.
For the bigger picture, see UAE visas explained.
48 hours or 96 hours: differences and validity
The UAE issues two transit visas, one for 48 hours and one for 96 hours. Both are single entry and cannot be extended. ICP lists 96 hours as the transit validity in its FAQ.
We could not confirm the fees from an official or airline page that we could open, so we quote none. Third-party figures vary widely. Get the price from the airline sponsoring your visa.
Who applies for you: Emirates, flydubai and other UAE airlines
The visa is sponsored by UAE-based airlines and must be approved before you enter. The portal lists the Emirates and Etihad pages as the places to apply. The airline requests it; you do not turn up at the border and ask.

Book your ticket first. The visa follows the ticket, which is why a stopover on a long-haul route is the easiest case. It is also why an agent selling a visa with no flight attached deserves suspicion.
Documents: passport validity, photo and onward ticket
The transit page lists no documents. ICP’s general requirements call for a coloured photo on a white background and a passport copy valid for more than 6 months. Airlines commonly add an onward ticket to a third country.
Prepare the photo to the standard in our UAE visa photo requirements.
Long layover at DXB: what fits into 6, 12 or 48 hours
Plan from the gate, not from the landing time. Immigration, bags and the exit can take time, and Dubai Airports advises arriving 3 hours before departure.

- Under 8 hours: usually not worth leaving. Spend it in the terminal.
- 8 to 12 hours: one sight. The Red Line metro runs from Terminals 1 and 3, and a private Dubai city tour shows the main sights in a fixed window.
- Over 24 hours: a hotel night and a longer plan. Our private tours can be built around your flight times, and the Dubai layover guide has more.
Connecting through Zayed International instead of Dubai
Etihad passengers connect through Zayed International (AUH) in Abu Dhabi. The same UAE transit rules apply, and Etihad is the sponsor for its own passengers. If you change between airports on separate tickets, read self-transfer connections between UAE airports.
Can a transit visa be extended or changed to a tourist visa?
No extension, says the portal. We found no official conversion route. If your plans grow, apply for a tourist or visit visa before you fly. See the visas section, or arriving in Dubai on a visit visa.
Leaving the airport: pickup point, luggage and getting back in time
At Terminal 3, a driver waits in the arrivals hall after immigration and walks you to the Terminal 3 car park, which Dubai Airports puts 2 to 3 minutes away on foot. Emirates passengers all arrive at Terminal 3.

Keep carry-on only if you can. Tell your driver your onward flight time before you leave the terminal, and agree a return time that gives you the 3-hour margin. We can plan a pickup at the airport for the day, quoted on WhatsApp.
