UAE visa photo requirements: size, background and the mistakes that get photos rejected

A UAE visa photo must be a recent colour photo on a plain white background, high quality and meeting ICAO standards. ICP states no hats or sunglasses, medical glasses only if they do not cover the eyes, and a neutral expression with the face straight. Sizes quoted online conflict, so check the service card for your visa.

What size should a UAE visa photo be?

Here the sources disagree, so be careful. The ICP FAQ quotes a personal photo of 3.5 x 4.5 cm with a white background for passport applications. The GDRFA Dubai tourist visa service card asks for “one personal photo” and gives no dimensions at all.

Third-party sites quote 43 x 55 mm, 35 x 40 mm and 45 x 35 mm. We cannot trace any of those to an ICP or GDRFA document, so we do not repeat them.

The practical answer: the person submitting your visa decides. A licensed typing centre or tourism office uploads the file through the ICP or GDRFA system and knows the crop that system accepts. Send a sharp original and let them size it. Our UAE visit visa pages explain who submits for you.

Background, lighting and colour rules

ICP asks for a coloured photo, recent, high quality, with a white background, meeting ICAO standards.

  • Background: plain white. No shadow behind the head or shoulders.
  • Light: even on both sides of the face. A window in front of you works better than an overhead bulb.
  • Colour: the photo must be in colour. Do not convert to black and white.
  • Recent: take it just before you apply. An old photo that no longer looks like you is a reason to be sent back.

Can you wear glasses, a hijab or a headscarf in the photo?

ICP’s FAQ is specific about glasses and hats. Hats and sunglasses are not allowed. Medical glasses are allowed only when they do not cover the eyes, so lenses with glare or heavy tint are a risk.

The FAQ page does not state a rule for religious headwear. We do not guess. Ask the sponsor or typing centre handling your file, and have the photo taken the way they confirm.

Keep a neutral expression and look straight at the camera.

Taking the photo on a phone

A phone camera can meet a high-quality standard if you control the setup.

  1. Stand about a hand’s width from a plain white wall, or hang a white sheet.
  2. Put the phone at eye level, ideally on a tripod or a stack of books.
  3. Face a window, with no light source behind you.
  4. Switch off beauty modes and filters.
  5. Send the original file, not a screenshot or a photo of a print.

Photo rules for babies and children

The ICP FAQ page we checked does not list separate rules for infants. Assume the same white-background standard. Lay a baby on a white sheet and take the photo from above, with no hands or toys in the frame. Confirm with the sponsor handling the visa before you rely on this.

Uploading the photo: file format and size limits

The GDRFA card does not publish a format or file size, and the ICP FAQ does not either. Limits sit inside each portal’s upload screen. Applications go through ICP eChannels, the UAEICP app, the GDRFA website or registered typing centres, according to the UAE Government portal.

If a portal rejects your file, do not edit it by hand. Retake it and upload the new original.

Common reasons photos are sent back

  • Background that is not plain white, or shadows on it.
  • Hats or sunglasses, or tinted lenses that hide the eyes.
  • A filtered, blurred or low-resolution image.
  • A photo of a printed picture, or a screenshot.
  • A tilted head or an unclear expression.

For each visa type, the same photo is used. If you are applying for a visa on arrival you do not upload one, but a Dubai transit visa request does ask for a photo. If you are coming for family, read the family visit visa guide.

Where to get a compliant photo in Dubai

Registered typing centres handle visa applications and often take photos on site. GDRFA lists the Amer centres on its website. We have not confirmed centre names or prices, so check before you go.

Questions and answers

What size should a UAE visa photo be?

ICP's FAQ quotes a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo with a white background for passport applications. The GDRFA Dubai tourist visa card asks for one personal photo and gives no size. Third-party sites quote other sizes, so do not rely on them. Ask the agent or typing centre submitting your visa which size their system takes.

What background does a UAE visa photo need?

Plain white. ICP lists a coloured personal photo with a white background, recent and of high quality. Shadows behind your head, a cream or grey wall, or a patterned curtain are the usual reasons for a resubmission. Stand a short distance from the wall and light your face evenly from the front.

Can I wear glasses or a hat in a UAE visa photo?

ICP says hats and sunglasses are not allowed. Medical glasses are permitted only if they do not cover the eyes, so avoid tinted lenses and frames that hide your eyes or glare in the flash. The FAQ does not set out rules for religious headwear, so ask your sponsor or typing centre before you have the photo taken.

Can I take my UAE visa photo on my phone?

ICP requires a recent, high-quality photo that meets ICAO standards. A phone can meet that if the image is sharp, evenly lit and taken straight on against a white wall. Do not use filters, beauty modes or a cropped selfie. The portal for your visa decides whether your file format and size are accepted.

What are the photo rules for babies and children?

The ICP FAQ page we checked does not set separate rules for infants or children, so assume the same standard applies: white background, face visible, eyes open if possible, no one else in the frame. Lay a baby on a white sheet and photograph from above. Confirm with the sponsor handling the application.

Why do UAE visa photos get sent back?

The usual causes are the ones ICP rules out: a non-white or shadowed background, hats, sunglasses or tinted lenses, an old photo, and a blurred or filtered image. A face that is tilted, a hand in the frame or a photo of a printed photo also fail. Retake it rather than editing the file.
