Places to visit in Abu Dhabi, with a one-day plan from Dubai

The places to visit in Abu Dhabi on a first trip are the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and Qasr Al Hosn. On the islands, add Louvre Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat, or the Yas Island theme parks. In a private car with Assure, three or four fit into one day.

What are the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi spreads over a main island and the islands beside it, so its sights sit further apart than Dubai’s. Most first visits draw from the seven places below. Each distance is by road from Dubai Marina, without traffic.

Place Where it is What you see From Dubai Marina
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Beside the three bridges onto the island White marble courtyards, domes and the main prayer hall about 108 km, 1 h 6 min
Qasr Al Watan The western end of the Corniche, by Emirates Palace The working presidential palace, its Great Hall and library about 128 km, 1 h 22 min
Qasr Al Hosn The old city centre, 3 km from the Corniche The white fort, the Cultural Foundation and the House of Artisans about 122 km, 1 h 16 min
Louvre Abu Dhabi Saadiyat Cultural District An art museum under a domed roof about 115 km, 1 h 11 min
Zayed National Museum Saadiyat Cultural District, about 1 km from the Louvre The story of the land before the UAE was formed about 115 km, 1 h 11 min
Yas Island theme parks Yas Island, the nearest island to the Dubai road Four theme parks, from Ferrari World to SeaWorld about 92 km, 59 min
The Corniche The north-west shore of the main island A waterfront promenade with beaches about 123 km, 1 h 17 min

Distances and times are OSRM averages on OpenStreetMap data, measured on 17 October 2026. If you want someone else to plan the order, our Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai runs the mosque, the palace, the Corniche and the Louvre in one day.

Culture: the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, Qasr Al Hosn and the Louvre

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The mosque is the first major sight on the E11 from Dubai, so most days start here. Visitors who are not there to pray pre-book an online access pass on the mosque’s official site. The mosque’s FAQ lists an entry fee of AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE and AED 5 for Emirates ID holders.

It opens from 9:00 to 20:30, Saturday to Thursday. On Friday, visits pause between 11:30 and 14:30 for Friday prayers. Women wear loose clothes to the ankles, sleeves to the wrists and a scarf over all their hair. Men cover their legs. The full rules, tour times and Ramadan hours are in our Grand Mosque visitor guide.

Qasr Al Watan

Qasr Al Watan is 21 km from the mosque, past the city centre at the western tip of the island. One general admission ticket opens the Great Hall, the Presidential Gifts hall and the palace library. The same ticket gets you into the Palace in Motion light show, and a free shuttle runs from the car park to the palace.

The ticket is single use, so leaving the grounds ends the visit. Knees and shoulders must be covered. Last entry to the palace is at closing time, and to Palace in Motion 30 minutes before the show starts.

Qasr Al Hosn

Qasr Al Hosn is the white fort in the old centre, about 7 km from Qasr Al Watan by road. It opens from 9:00 to 20:00, Saturday to Thursday, and from 14:00 to 20:00 on Friday. The House of Artisans and the landscape around the fort are free. The fort itself is ticketed, and Al Hosn tickets are not refundable.

Louvre Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum

Both stand in the Saadiyat Cultural District, about 1 km apart. Visit Abu Dhabi suggests 1 to 2 hours for each attraction there. Zayed National Museum, designed by Foster + Partners, generally opens at 10:00. Check the Louvre’s own site for its hours on your date.

Visit Abu Dhabi also lists a Museum Pass that covers two or all three of the Louvre, Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is shown as coming soon. Ask us to add museum entry to your booking through our attraction tickets page.

Islands: Saadiyat, Yas and Al Maryah

The three islands suit different days out. Saadiyat and Yas are about 25 km apart by road.

  • Saadiyat Island is the museum island. The Louvre, Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum and teamLab Phenomena are listed in the cultural district. It is about 15 km from Qasr Al Watan.
  • Yas Island holds the theme parks and is the first island you reach from Dubai, about 92 km from Dubai Marina. It sits 16 km from Zayed International Airport (AUH). Our Yas Island theme parks trip covers park choice, height rules and the drive.
  • Al Maryah Island is the business island beside the city centre. The Galleria mall and its waterfront promenade make it a short evening stop rather than a full day.

Outdoors: the Corniche, the mangroves and the desert

The Corniche runs along the north-west shore of the main island, between Qasr Al Watan and the old centre. It is free to walk, and Qasr Al Hosn is 3 km inland from it. From May to September, walk it in the late afternoon rather than at midday.

A national park of grey mangroves lies on the eastern side of the island. The Eastern Mangroves shore is about 10 km from the Grand Mosque by road, so it pairs well with a morning at the mosque. If you want to paddle, tell us your date and we check which kayak trips run.

For dunes, an Abu Dhabi desert safari heads inland towards Al Ain, to deserts such as Al Khatim. If you are staying in Dubai and want a shorter drive, the Dubai desert safari starts from your hotel there.

Which places are free?

Place Entry
The Corniche Free to walk
Qasr Al Hosn House of Artisans and the landscape free, the fort ticketed
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque AED 10, or AED 5 with an Emirates ID; guided cultural tours free
Saadiyat museums Free for under-18s at most of them, according to Visit Abu Dhabi
Qasr Al Watan Ticketed, including the Palace in Motion show
Yas Island theme parks Ticketed per park

Fees are the venues’ own, checked on 17 October 2026. Prices for Assure’s cars are quoted per trip on WhatsApp.

One day in Abu Dhabi from Dubai: a timed plan

This plan starts in Dubai Marina on a Saturday to Thursday and keeps to free-flow drive times. Leave 20 minutes earlier from Downtown Dubai, which is about 127 km from the mosque.

Time Stop Drive from the stop before
8:30 Leave Dubai Marina on the E11
9:40 Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with the free 11:00 cultural tour about 108 km, 1 h 6 min
12:00 Qasr Al Watan, Great Hall and library about 21 km, 20 min
13:45 Lunch near the Corniche, then Qasr Al Hosn about 7 km, 9 min
15:30 Louvre Abu Dhabi or Zayed National Museum about 10 km, 11 min
17:45 Leave Saadiyat for Dubai Marina, or for AUH about 115 km, 1 h 11 min

On a Friday, run the day the other way round. Start at Saadiyat or Qasr Al Watan in the morning, after checking their Friday hours, then reach the mosque once it reopens to visitors at 14:30. Qasr Al Hosn also opens late on Fridays, at 14:00.

From Dubai the car takes Sheikh Zayed Road, then Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road past Ghantoot. The Darb gate there charges AED 4 per crossing since 4 May 2026. The road into the island is Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street. Our Dubai to Abu Dhabi transfer drives the same road one way, and the Dubai to Abu Dhabi travel guide compares the bus, the train and a car.

For more than one day in the capital, our Abu Dhabi tours page sets out the full-day options side by side.

Ending the day at Zayed International Airport or an Abu Dhabi hotel

A private car does not have to return to Dubai. Three endings work well:

  1. Zayed International (AUH), Terminal A. It is about 40 km from the Louvre, 29 km from the Grand Mosque and 16 km from Yas Island. Bring your luggage in the boot and your passport. Our AUH airport transfer page covers the terminal.
  2. An Abu Dhabi hotel. The car can drop you on the main island, Saadiyat or Yas.
  3. Back in Dubai. The drive from Saadiyat to Dubai Marina is about 115 km, 1 h 11 min without traffic.

A day that starts in Dubai runs in Assure’s own cars under our RTA licence. A pickup that starts at an Abu Dhabi hotel needs a car licensed in Abu Dhabi, which we arrange through our partner network, subject to availability.

Questions and answers

What are the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi?

Most first visits cover the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan presidential palace and the Corniche. Add Qasr Al Hosn in the old centre, and on Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum. Families often swap a museum for Yas Island, where Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld and Yas Waterworld sit close together, about 92 km from Dubai Marina.

Can you see Abu Dhabi in one day from Dubai?

Yes, if you pick three or four places and go by car. Leave Dubai Marina at 8:30, reach the Grand Mosque about 70 minutes later, then Qasr Al Watan, lunch near the Corniche and a Saadiyat museum. You are back in the Marina by about 19:00. On a Friday, swap the order, because the mosque pauses visits from 11:30 to 14:30.

Which places in Abu Dhabi are free to visit?

The Corniche waterfront is free to walk. At Qasr Al Hosn, the House of Artisans and the landscape around the fort are free, while the fort itself needs a ticket. Visit Abu Dhabi says under-18s enter most Saadiyat museums free. The Grand Mosque now lists an entry fee for visitors, but its guided cultural tours are free.

How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai by car?

It depends on both ends. On OSRM road data, Dubai Marina is about 108 km from the Grand Mosque and 115 km from the Louvre, roughly 66 to 71 minutes without traffic. From Downtown Dubai, add about 20 km and 15 minutes. Morning and evening rush hour on the E11 add time, and the Ghantoot Darb gate charges AED 4 per crossing.

Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free to enter?

Not for visitors any more. The mosque's FAQ lists AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders and AED 8 for visitors through tour operators. Worshippers enter without a ticket. Every visitor pre-books an online access pass, and the guided cultural tours at 11:00, 13:00 and 17:00 are free.

Should a family pick Yas Island or Saadiyat?

Pick Yas for theme parks and Saadiyat for museums. Yas is the closer island to Dubai, about 92 km from Dubai Marina, and its four parks fill a whole day. Saadiyat holds the Louvre, Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum, and under-18s enter most of them free. The two islands are about 25 km apart by road.

Can the day end at Zayed International Airport?

Yes. Terminal A at Zayed International (AUH) is about 40 km from the Louvre, 29 km from the Grand Mosque and 16 km from Yas Island by road. Bring your luggage in the boot and your passport. Tell us your flight time, and we plan the last stop so you reach the terminal with time to check in.
