Places to visit in Dubai, grouped by area with drive times

The places most first-time visitors want in Dubai fall into four areas: Downtown (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall), Old Dubai (Al Fahidi, the Creek, the souks), the coast (Jumeirah Mosque, Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, the Marina) and the outskirts (Global Village, desert). Grouping them by area keeps drives between stops under 30 minutes.

What are the must-see places in Dubai?

Dubai is a long city strung along the coast, so the order you visit in matters more than the list. A route that jumps from the Marina to Old Dubai and back to the Palm can eat three hours in the car.

Group the stops into four areas and finish one before you move on. All drive times below are without traffic.

Downtown: Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Fountain and Dubai Opera

Downtown Dubai is the compact core. Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Dubai Fountain lake and Dubai Opera sit within walking distance of one another. The Museum of the Future is about 4 km away, a 5 minute drive.

Book Burj Khalifa observation deck entry on the official site, which sells timed slots. Ask for a sunset slot if you want both light and city lights. For where a car can stop at the mall, read our guide to Dubai Mall pickup points.

Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, the Creek, the Gold and Spice Souks

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood in Bur Dubai is about 10 km from Downtown, 11 minutes by car. Wind towers, narrow lanes and small museums fill the district, and the Creek is a short walk from there.

Cross the Creek by abra to the Deira side, where the Spice and Gold Souks are. The crossing is cheap and short, and our abra ride guide explains stations and payment. The Dubai Frame is an 8 minute drive from Al Fahidi, about 5 km, so it fits the same morning.

The coast: Jumeirah Mosque, Burj Al Arab views, Palm Jumeirah and the Marina

Jumeirah Mosque is about 7 km from Downtown. It is one of the few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslims, and visitors register at the majlis opposite. Dress modestly and check the visit programme with the centre before you go.

From there the coast road runs on:

  • Burj Al Arab: about 16 km from Downtown, 17 minutes.
  • Atlantis, The Palm: about 26 km from Downtown, 27 minutes.
  • Dubai Marina: about 11 km further on, 16 minutes from Atlantis.

For the water views from the Marina, compare the Marina, Creek and Canal dhow cruises. If you are choosing where to base yourself, see where to stay in Dubai.

Further out: Global Village, Miracle Garden and the desert

Global Village is about 23 km from Downtown, 23 minutes, and runs as a seasonal evening park. Its gates open from 4pm. Our guide to Global Village timings has the schedule and ticket types. Dubai Miracle Garden is about 15 km from Global Village, 15 minutes.

The desert is further: the Lahbab dunes are about 48 km from Downtown. Most safaris collect you mid-afternoon, which makes the desert a separate half day. See morning vs evening desert safari.

How long between them? A drive-time table

From To Road distance Without traffic
Downtown Al Fahidi about 10 km 11 min
Downtown Dubai Frame about 7 km 9 min
Downtown Jumeirah Mosque about 7 km 9 min
Downtown Burj Al Arab about 16 km 17 min
Downtown Dubai Marina about 22 km 19 min
Downtown Global Village about 23 km 23 min
Burj Al Arab Atlantis, The Palm about 12 km 18 min
Atlantis, The Palm Dubai Marina about 11 km 16 min

These come from the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data, checked on 17 October 2026, and use approximate points. Evening and Friday traffic can double them. Our Dubai rush hour guide shows when roads are slowest, and our guide to Dubai attractions by car pairs each sight with a drop-off point.

A one-day and a two-day plan by car

One day. Start at Al Fahidi at 8am, cross the Creek by abra, then drive to Downtown for lunch at Dubai Mall. Take a sunset slot at the Burj Khalifa and finish at the fountain lake.

Two days. Keep day one as above. On day two, go west: Jumeirah Mosque in the morning, a Burj Al Arab photo stop, Palm Jumeirah at midday and the Marina for sunset or a dhow dinner. A fuller version is in our Dubai itinerary.

If you would rather not manage the order, a Dubai city tour runs these stops, and private tours let the group set the pace. A car with driver by the hour waits at each stop. For tickets with transfer, see attraction tickets, and for sights beyond the city, day trips from Dubai. Arriving by ship? See Dubai cruise shore excursions, and for a long stopover, the Dubai layover guide.

Which places need tickets booked ahead?

Burj Khalifa observation decks and the Dubai Frame sell timed entries, so book those first. Global Village sells its own entry. Check opening hours and prices on each official site, because they change by season. We have not listed prices here.

Questions and answers

What are the must-see places in Dubai?

For a first visit, most people pick the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, the Al Fahidi district and the Creek abra, the Burj Al Arab view from Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and a desert safari. Together they sit in four areas, so a day can cover one or two.

How many days do you need to see Dubai?

Two days covers the main sights if you group them by area: Downtown and Old Dubai on one day, the coast on the other. A desert safari takes a late afternoon and evening, so add a third day if you want it without rushing.

Which places in Dubai need tickets booked ahead?

The Burj Khalifa observation decks and Dubai Frame sell timed entries, and Global Village sells entry on its own site. Check each official site for hours and prices. Our attraction tickets page covers entry with a transfer, and the Jumeirah Mosque visit is registered at the majlis opposite.

Can you do Dubai without a car?

Yes, partly. The Metro serves Downtown and the Marina, and abras cross the Creek. The gaps are the coast between them, Global Village and the desert. A car with driver covers those, and waits while you are inside.

How far apart are the main sights in Dubai?

Downtown to Al Fahidi is about 10 km, 11 minutes without traffic. Downtown to the Burj Al Arab is about 16 km, and Downtown to Dubai Marina about 22 km. Palm Jumeirah to the Marina is about 11 km. Allow double at rush hour.

When is the best time of day to visit?

Go outdoors early or after sunset between June and September, and keep midday for malls and indoor decks. From November to March you can walk Al Fahidi and the Creek at any hour.
