Wedding convoy rules in the UAE: what is legal and what gets fined

Wedding cars driving to the venue as ordinary traffic are legal in the UAE. The federal fines schedule lists AED 500, 4 black points and 15 days' impound for using vehicles in marches without permission, and AED 400 and 4 points for disturbing horn use. Ask Assure to set the arrival order at the venue, not on the road.

Under the wedding convoy rules in the UAE, a convoy is legal when every car drives as ordinary traffic. Four cars leaving a hotel in Jumeirah for the same venue, each in its lane at normal speed, break no rule.

The offence is something else. The federal fines schedule, under Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, lists “using the vehicles in marches without permission or in unauthorized situations”. It carries AED 500, 4 black points and 15 days’ impound for a light vehicle.

A new federal traffic law, Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, took effect on 29 March 2025. The UAE Government portal still links the 2017 schedule as its list of traffic offences. Check the current amounts with police before you rely on a figure.

What counts as an unauthorised parade?

The schedule’s English text does not define a march. These are the signs that a line of cars has stopped behaving like traffic:

  • The cars drive side by side and fill every lane.
  • The line slows to a crawl so guests can film.
  • One car stops in the road to let the others regroup.
  • Cars weave between lanes to stay together.
  • Horns sound the whole way.

Most of those carry a fine of their own, listed below. So a convoy can collect several penalties at once, on several cars.

The fines: parades, horns, stunts and blocking traffic

Item Offence, as worded in the schedule Fine Black points Impound, light vehicle
94 Using the vehicles in marches without permission or in unauthorized situations AED 500 4 15 days
105 Using the horn or the vehicle radio in a disturbing way AED 400 4 None listed
56 Stopping in the middle of the road without a justified reason AED 1,000 6 None listed
28 Driving below the minimum speed limit set for the road AED 400 None listed None listed
29 Sudden deviation of the vehicle AED 1,000 4 None listed
1 Driving in a way that jeopardises the lives or safety of the driver or others AED 2,000 23 60 days
98 Causing disturbance to traffic in any way not otherwise listed AED 500 None listed None listed
51 Not fastening the seat belt of the driver or of all passengers AED 400 4 None listed

The horn rule has a second layer. The UAE Government portal says horn use within city limits is restricted to emergencies. Honking out of a hotel driveway on the way to the reception is not an emergency.

Do the rules differ between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah?

The schedule is federal, so the same items apply in every emirate. Each emirate’s police enforce it on their own roads, and fines can be checked through the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police, RTA and Ras Al Khaimah eGovernment.

Police also run their own campaigns around celebrations. After one National Day, Abu Dhabi Police reported impounding 280 vehicles for a month, with Dh2,000 fines and 12 black points. The listed offences included causing noise, spraying paint and leaning out of sunroofs.

News reports have described stricter penalties for convoys in some emirates, including Ras Al Khaimah. We could not confirm the current figures from a police source. For a wedding outside Dubai, ask that emirate’s police directly.

If your date falls near National Day, also read our guide to Dubai road closures for events, since parades and patrols change the routes that evening.

How do professional chauffeurs drive a wedding convoy?

The aim is that the cars arrive in order without ever driving as a group. Ask your chauffeurs to work this way:

  1. Every car gets the venue address and its own arrival time. Nobody has to follow the car in front.
  2. Cars leave 2 to 3 minutes apart. The groom first, the family next, the bride last.
  3. Normal gaps and normal speed. If a red light splits the line, each car carries on alone.
  4. No horns and no flashing hazard lights. Hazard lights are for a real hazard, and flashing them in moving traffic confuses drivers behind.
  5. The order is set at the entrance. Cars that arrive early wait in the venue’s car park until the bride’s car is called forward.

Every Assure wedding car comes with a chauffeur, and our chauffeur service runs under an RTA licence. Our guide to what an RTA limousine licence means explains what that covers for passengers.

For a large family, fewer vehicles make the whole question smaller. Thirty relatives in one coach from our bus and coach rental range is one vehicle on the road instead of ten cars.

Can you get a permit for a procession?

The fine is for marches “without permission”, so permission is the route for a real procession. Ask the police in the emirate where it would take place, and do it weeks before the date, not days.

A chauffeur company cannot grant that approval. If what you have in mind happens inside a hotel’s grounds, such as a baraat or a zaffa at the entrance, agree it with the venue. The cars should be parked before it starts, not moving through it.

Hazard lights, sunroofs and standing passengers

  • Sunroofs. Abu Dhabi Police list leaning or standing out of a vehicle’s windows or sunroof as a violation. Keep the roof for light, or for photos once the car is parked.
  • Seat belts. Every passenger wears one, the bride included. The schedule lists AED 400 and 4 black points for each unbelted passenger.
  • Children. A child under 10, or shorter than 145 cm, rides in the rear. A child under 4 needs a child seat. Both carry AED 400 fines.
  • Spray and confetti. Abu Dhabi Police have listed spraying paint from a car among celebration offences. Keep party spray off the cars and out of the windows.

Our guide on how to choose a wedding car covers fitting a full gown and a seat belt in the same rear seat.

Decorated cars in a convoy

Decoration has its own limits, and they apply to every car in the line:

  • The number plates stay fully readable. An unclear plate costs AED 400.
  • No writing or stickers without permission: AED 500.
  • Nothing that blocks the driver’s view, the lights or the windows. Abu Dhabi Police list additions that impede visibility among violations.

Ask the car’s owner what can be fitted. Our wedding car hire page sets out how decoration is handled when you book.

Who carries the fine if a wedding car is fined?

Black points go on the driver’s traffic record, and an impound takes the car off the road. In a chauffeur car, those usually fall on the chauffeur and the operator, even when a passenger caused the offence. So expect a professional chauffeur to say no to stopping in a lane or opening the roof for standing guests.

Ask how passenger-caused fines are handled in the booking terms before you confirm. For the wider plan, from the couple’s car to guest coaches, see our wedding transport planning guide. For evenings other than the wedding itself, see our limousine service.

Questions and answers

Is a wedding convoy allowed in Dubai?

Cars from the same wedding may drive to the venue one behind another, as long as each one drives as ordinary traffic. What is fined is turning that line into a march without permission, which the federal schedule lists at AED 500, 4 black points and 15 days' impound for a light vehicle. Blocking lanes, crawling and stopping for photos are what turn a line into a march.

What is the fine for a wedding convoy in the UAE?

The schedule under Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017 lists AED 500, 4 black points and 15 days' impound for using vehicles in marches without permission. Other fines can stack on top: AED 400 and 4 points for disturbing horn use, and AED 1,000 and 6 points for stopping in the road without a justified reason. A new federal traffic law took effect on 29 March 2025, so check current amounts with police.

What is the fine for honking in Dubai?

The federal schedule lists AED 400 and 4 black points for using the horn or the car's radio in a disturbing way. The UAE Government portal also says horn use within city limits is restricted to emergencies. So a chorus of horns leaving a hotel on Jumeirah Beach Road is an offence, not a tradition, and each car that joins in can be fined.

Can guests stand through the sunroof of a wedding car?

No. Abu Dhabi Police list leaning or standing out of a vehicle's windows or sunroof as a traffic violation. A guest standing through the roof is also not wearing a seat belt, and the schedule fines AED 400 and 4 black points for any unbelted passenger. Keep the sunroof for light and photos while the car is parked.

Do I need a permit for a wedding procession?

The fine applies to marches without permission, so a procession on public roads needs approval first. Ask the police of the emirate where it would take place, well before the date. A chauffeur company cannot grant that approval. A baraat or zaffa inside a hotel's grounds is a matter to agree with the venue, with the cars parked before it starts.

Can wedding cars stop on the road for photos?

Not in a traffic lane. The federal schedule lists AED 1,000 and 6 black points for stopping in the middle of the road without a justified reason. Plan photo stops at places where a car can park legally, such as a hotel forecourt, a venue car park or a beach car park, and agree them with the photographer before the day.

Can a wedding car carry a Just Married sign?

Ask the car's owner first, and keep the sign well clear of the number plate. The schedule lists AED 400 for an unclear plate and AED 500 for writing phrases or placing stickers on a vehicle without permission. A removable sign fixed below the rear window, with the plate fully readable, is the safer choice than anything stuck to the paint or glass.
