Which area of Abu Dhabi is best to stay in?

Abu Dhabi is a set of islands joined by bridges, so the area you pick decides how much of your day goes on the road. Five areas cover almost every trip.

Area Best for By road from Zayed International (AUH) By road from Dubai Marina
Corniche and Al Khalidiya First visit, city centre, Qasr Al Watan about 42 km, 37 min about 124 km, 78 min
Saadiyat Island Beach, Louvre Abu Dhabi about 41 km, 35 min about 115 km, 70 min
Yas Island Theme parks, Grand Prix weekend, early flights about 17 km, 24 min about 92 km, 59 min
Al Maryah Island Business, meetings about 45 km, 38 min about 120 km, 73 min
Al Reem Island Apartments, longer stays about 42 km, 39 min not measured

Times are free-flow figures from OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, measured on 17 October 2026. Rush hour adds time. See the section on distances below.

The Corniche and Al Khalidiya

The Corniche is the waterfront road on the north-west of Abu Dhabi island, and Al Khalidiya sits just behind it. This is the nearest thing to a traditional city-centre stay. Hotels, restaurants and the long public promenade are all within a few kilometres.

Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace that takes visitors, is a short drive away. It asks guests to cover knees and shoulders and runs a free shuttle bus from its car park. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 18 km from the Corniche, 17 minutes without traffic. Our Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque visitor guide covers entry and dress.

Pick this area if it is your first trip and you want to see the capital rather than a resort.

Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat is the cultural and beach island. The Saadiyat Cultural District holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena, according to Visit Abu Dhabi.

The Corniche is about 12 km and 15 minutes from the Louvre by road. Yas Island is about 25 km and 21 minutes. That makes Saadiyat a good base if your days split between the beach and museums. The Louvre has its own page in our Louvre Abu Dhabi visitor guide.

The trade-off is distance from the airport, about 41 km, and from Dubai, about 115 km from Dubai Marina.

Yas Island

Yas Island is the entertainment island: Ferrari World, the other theme parks and the Yas Marina Circuit. It is also the closest base to Zayed International Airport, about 17 km and 24 minutes without traffic.

That makes Yas the sensible choice before an early flight, and for a Grand Prix weekend when you want to walk to the circuit. Our Yas Island theme parks tour and the airport to Yas and Saadiyat transfer guide cover the practical side.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 25 km from Yas, 22 minutes. Yas sits on its own island, so the Corniche and the old city centre are a separate drive. Check the route in your hotel’s directions.

Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands

Al Maryah Island is the business island, close to the Corniche side of the city, with offices, a large mall and hotels aimed at meetings. Al Reem Island is mostly apartments and serviced residences, which suit stays of a week or more.

Both sit about 42 to 45 km from Zayed International by road, 38 to 39 minutes without traffic. For short visits, the Corniche or Yas usually gives you more to do on foot. Choose these two when the meeting or the apartment decides it.

How far is each area from Zayed International Airport and Dubai?

The table above gives the road numbers. Three points help when you compare them.

  • Yas Island is the outlier. It is about 17 km from Zayed International, and every other area is 41 km or more.
  • Dubai International is farther than Dubai Marina. Dubai International to the Corniche is about 159 km, 106 minutes without traffic, so choose the Dubai end with care.
  • The E11 route crosses Darb gates. The Ghantoot and Al Qurm gates charge AED 4 a crossing round the clock. Peak-hour gates charge from 7 to 9 am and 3 to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday. Our Darb tolls guide lists the rules.

If you also need a Dubai base, read where to stay in Dubai. Our Dubai to Abu Dhabi transfer page covers the road between them.

Getting around Abu Dhabi from your hotel

Every area above needs a car for at least some of the day. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Yas Island and Saadiyat Island are each on their own roads, and the 3 to 7 pm toll window overlaps with the evening rush.

Our guide to getting around Abu Dhabi compares taxis, ride-hailing and buses. For a fixed plan, chauffeur service in Abu Dhabi gives you one driver for the day, and an airport transfer from Zayed International starts the trip at the arrivals hall.

Questions and answers

Which area of Abu Dhabi is best to stay in?

It depends on the trip. The Corniche suits a first visit because the city centre, Qasr Al Watan and the waterfront are close. Saadiyat Island suits beach and museum days. Yas Island suits theme parks and an early flight from Zayed International. Al Maryah and Al Reem suit meetings. Pick by what you will do on most days.

Is it better to stay on Yas Island or Saadiyat Island?

Choose Yas Island for Ferrari World, the other theme parks and the shortest drive to the airport, about 17 km. Choose Saadiyat Island for the beach and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The two are about 25 km and 21 minutes apart without traffic, so you can stay on one and visit the other.

Where should I stay in Abu Dhabi for first-time visitors?

The Corniche side of the island is the easiest base. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 18 km away, Qasr Al Watan is a short drive, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi is about 12 km. Hotels there cluster along the waterfront road. Expect to use a car for the mosque and the theme parks.

How far is each area from Zayed International Airport?

From the airport by road, Yas Island is about 17 km, Saadiyat Island about 41 km, the Corniche about 42 km, Al Reem Island about 42 km and Al Maryah Island about 45 km. Free-flow times run from 24 to 39 minutes. Allow longer at 7 to 9 am and 3 to 7 pm.

Should I stay in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

If you want the most sights, shops and nightlife in one place, Dubai. If you want a calmer base with the Louvre, the mosque and Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Dubai Marina to the Corniche is about 124 km without traffic, so staying in one and day-tripping to the other works.

Do I need a car if I stay in Abu Dhabi?

For most visitors, yes. The sights sit on separate islands and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is on the mainland. Taxis work, and our guide to getting around Abu Dhabi compares them. A private driver on a fixed plan avoids repeated waits, and Assure quotes on WhatsApp for your dates.
