Dubai’s best-known boutiques sit in clusters, not on one street. A shopping day goes well when the car follows the clusters, and badly when you cross the city twice. This guide covers five districts, where a chauffeur drops and waits, and what to do about VAT.
Which districts suit a personal shopping day?
Five areas cover most luxury and design shopping:
- Fashion Avenue at The Dubai Mall, in Downtown. The mall’s parking page lists Fashion Avenue (MBR Boulevard) and Fashion Avenue Parking Level 3.
- Mall of the Emirates, in Al Barsha, on the west side of the city.
- Dubai Design District (d3), between Downtown and Business Bay. The district’s own site describes art, design and fashion brands, boutiques and dining.
- Gate Avenue at DIFC. DIFC’s brochure describes a walkway from the Gate Building to Central Park Towers with over 200 retail options.
- Souk Madinat Jumeirah, part of the Madinat Jumeirah resort in Umm Suqeim, built as a shopping and dining arcade.
If you manage guests for a hotel, a brand or a family office, our luxury retail and concierge transport page explains how accounts work.
How far apart are the districts?
Distances matter more than names. These are OSRM free-flow routes, rounded, checked on 25 October 2026.
| Leg | Distance | Time without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai Mall to Dubai Design District | about 4.4 km | about 8 minutes |
| Dubai Mall to Gate Avenue, DIFC | about 2.7 km | about 6 minutes |
| Gate Avenue to Dubai Design District | about 5.5 km | about 8 minutes |
| Dubai Mall to Mall of the Emirates | about 15 km | about 16 minutes |
| Mall of the Emirates to Souk Madinat Jumeirah | about 5 km | about 7 minutes |
| Gate Avenue to Souk Madinat Jumeirah | about 18 km | about 16 minutes |
Downtown, DIFC and d3 are a tight triangle of 3 to 6 km. The western pair, Mall of the Emirates and Souk Madinat, is another cluster. The step between the two clusters is the longest drive of the day. Plan it once, ideally at midday, and read the rush hour guide before you set times.

Where does a chauffeur drop you and wait?
The driver chooses the closest legal stop to your door, then waits nearby. Kerbs are controlled, so a car cannot sit outside a shop for an hour.
Fashion Avenue. The Dubai Mall lists Fashion Avenue (MBR Boulevard) and Fashion Avenue Parking Level 3 as separate parking facilities, and it shows a valet option. The mall’s security controls where cars stop. Our Dubai Mall pickup points guide covers the doors and the wait.
Gate Avenue. DIFC’s own plan marks drop-off areas, valet parking and car park access around the Gate Avenue promenade. Which one suits you depends on the shop, so name the shop and the driver picks the door. The DIFC drop-off guide goes into more detail.
Mall of the Emirates, d3 and Souk Madinat. We could not confirm a published drop-off point for these on official pages. Ask the venue for its car entrance, or send us the shop name and we confirm the stop with the driver before you arrive.
A note on the mix. Fashion Avenue and Gate Avenue are retail corridors with large international names. Dubai Design District leans towards design studios, concept stores and events such as Dubai Design Week. Souk Madinat Jumeirah is a different format: a covered arcade with smaller shops and restaurants. Pick the format that matches what you buy, because the format decides how long you stay.
How do you time a day?
Start late, break at midday and keep the long drive for the quietest hour. A workable day looks like this:
- 10:30 to 13:00: Fashion Avenue at The Dubai Mall. Confirm opening times with the shops first.
- 13:00 to 14:00: lunch at Gate Avenue or in DIFC, a 6-minute drive.
- 14:00 to 16:00: Dubai Design District. Leave time for each visit, as boutiques here are spread out.
- 16:00 to 16:30: drive west, before the peak.
- 16:30 to 19:30: Mall of the Emirates, then dinner at Souk Madinat Jumeirah.
Opening hours vary by shop, so confirm the ones that matter. If your day is part of a seasonal sale, the Dubai Shopping Festival guide covers extra crowds. For a day like this, book by the hour. The reasons are in hourly vs transfer chauffeur.

How do you carry purchases?
Leave bags in the car, not in your hands. The driver stays with the vehicle and can take bags at each stop. Capacity is listed in standard bags in our fleet data, which is not the same as shopping bags.
| Vehicle | Seats | Bags |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes S-Class | 3 | 2 |
| GMC Yukon | 6 | 3 |
| Mercedes V-Class | 6 | 4 |
If you expect large items, such as framed art or furniture, tell the booker the size. A van or SUV is better than a sedan. See seats and luggage capacity for the full table.
How does the tourist VAT refund work?
The Federal Tax Authority runs a tourist refund scheme, and Planet is its exclusive operator. The UAE government portal sets out the rules:
- Buy from a participating retailer. A minimum of AED 250 per tax-free purchase applies, and you must be at least 18.
- Show your travel document at the till. The shop records your details in the Planet system and adds a tax-free tag to the receipt.
- Keep the goods. They must still be in your possession when you leave, and unconsumed.
- Validate at the exit point, which can be an airport, seaport or land border, within 90 days of the purchase date.
- Receive the refund in cash in dirhams or on a credit card. The portal says you get 85% of the VAT paid, minus AED 4.80 per tag.
Put the receipts, tags and passport copy in one folder. Allow extra time at the airport for validation, and ask your chauffeur to drop you at the correct terminal. The airport departure timing guide sets out the clock. Check the portal for current rules before you shop.
How do you brief the driver for a personal shopping day?
A personal shopper or a concierge usually knows the stores. The driver needs the route, not the stock. Send these items the evening before:
- The list of stops in order, with the shop name at each.
- The door or car park you want for each pickup.
- A contact number for the person coordinating the day.
- The number of guests and the size of the expected purchases.
- Any hard time, such as a flight, a fitting or a dinner.
Agree how the driver is told to move on. A text to the driver when you leave the shop works better than a call, because phones do not always ring in a mall. Ask the driver to confirm each stop on WhatsApp so the person managing the day sees the car’s progress without calling.
What else is worth knowing?
Parking can be hard in busy periods, so ask the driver to stay with the car, not park and walk. The Dubai parking guide covers the areas. If you are planning a brand evening rather than a shopping day, read our guide to luxury brand event guest transport.
Assure takes personal shopping days as hourly bookings with a car and driver. Send your list of districts on WhatsApp and we confirm the vehicle. For the wider fleet, see our chauffeur service page or the corporate chauffeur options for companies.
